Markman, 71, is retiring but can still participate in opinions and orders through December. Before the court heard five cases Thursday, Chief Justice Bridget McCormack recognized Markman's tenure as a judge at the Supreme Court and the Michigan appeals court as well as U.S. attorney in Detroit and deputy attorney general in Washington. “I know very few people who have had such a long and committed career to public service as Justice Markman,” McCormack said. Markman said it's “been a blessing” to serve on the Supreme Court.

The attorneys told a federal judge the most recent lawsuits filed against the university should be thrown out. Some involved in the Nassar case called the attorneys' tone aggressive. In February, as more and more Nassar victims surfaced and gave their emotional testimony about the horrors he committed, then-acting university President Satish Udpa fell on his sword. "I think they're just trying to pass the buck and they should take responsibility and be accountable for it," one student said.
