Police said that although Malhi told officers he was armed, it was determined that he did not have a weapon. Officials said Kanwarbir Malhi, 25, was in a stolen car, ignored commands, said he had a gun and made violent gestures. Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide said the incident happened around 1 a.m. Saturday near the Spring Hill apartments at Ryan and Utica roads. They called police and reported the car stolen, officials said. AdOfficers on patrol overnight saw the stolen car and did what's called a "felony stop."

The man has been identified as 25-year-old Kanwarbir Malhi, of Shelby Township. The Sheriff's Office said in statement that Malhi was an Asian/Indian man. Shelby Township police say as a result of the man's noncompliance, an officer fired his weapon to stop the man's "aggressive action." AdThe investigation has been turned over to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
