CLAIR SHORES โ Hatum Akrawi was sentenced Friday to eight to 15 years behind bars for manslaughter after a deadly assault at a St. Clair Shores bar in 2019. Akrawi sat in court and listened as the family of Shawn Kubic tearfully described the pain he caused. Despite the pleas from Kubicโs family, the judge sentenced Akrawi to eight to 15 years, two years shy of the maximum sentence. Akrawiโs attack was described as a sucker punch, but Judge Michael Servitto made it clear that it was much more. Akrawi waited until Kubic was at his most vulnerable inside Kaponeโs Bar and hit him with every ounce of strength in his body.

CLAIR SHORES โ A murder charge has been dropped against a man accused in a deadly assault at a St. Clair Shores bar last year. Hatum Akrawi had been charged with second-degree murder after punching 47-year-old Shawn Kubic at Kaponeโs Sports Tavern in December. Kubicโs family said they were shocked by a Macomb County judgeโs decision to dismiss the murder chargeโVery disappointing. Weโve been waiting for eight months and this is the result after eight months,โ said Kathleen Zelmanski, Kubicโs mother. The Kubic family said they want justice for Shawn, who leaves behind a 17-year-old daughter and a grieving family.
