Spranger pleaded no contest to a lesser charge in a case accusing her of stealing money from a 78-year-old woman in her care. She was also ordered to immediately pay $1,660 in restitution -- the amount she was accused of stealing from the woman. Pictures from a Chase Bank in January 2019 showed Spranger making the withdrawals allegedly without permission from the victim. Spranger was accused of assaulting the woman when she was confronted but was not charged with assault.

Spranger was charged with larceny, which is a felony, but pleaded no contest Wednesday to the lesser misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace. In all, the Macomb County prosecutor said Spranger made eight withdrawals worth $1,660 between Jan. 1 and Jan. 8. Spranger was also accused of assaulting that 78-year-old woman when she confronted Spranger about the money.

She has not been charged with assault and her attorney doesn't think it will be added to these charges.

Macomb County attorney John Schapka said last week that Karen Spranger allowed two non-county employees access to her computer, which has confidential information on it. Spranger's computer ban isn't permanent, but more of a suspension until Macomb County officials can make sure the situation doesn't happen again. Spranger offered this statement:Let it be known that the county computer access was denied on January 11, 2017 without any prior notification to my Offices. These protocols and policies need to be clearly outlined for a better understanding of expectations for all those working diligently on behalf of the taxpayers of Macomb County.
