AdThe project requires permits from the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. โ€œWe have issued permits designed to ensure that if a tunnel is constructed, it will be in strict compliance with relevant statutes and adhere to stringent protections against impacts to the Great Lakes,โ€ Clark said. State officials emphasized the tunnel project was a separate legal matter from the dispute over the existing pipeline, which was laid in 1953. It has taken steps to prevent future anchor strikes and says the tunnel project would eliminate that danger.

The 62nd Annual Bride Walk on the Mackinac Bridge is set for Sept. 2, 2019. Here's what you need to know:As it was for the 2018 Annual Bridge Walk, the Mackinac Bridge will be closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 to accommodate the 2019 Annual Bridge Walk. Walkers will use the left-hand outside paved lane as they walk onto the bridge, regardless of which end of the bridge they start from. Please note, there are no restrooms on the bridge and the average length of time to walk the bridge is about two hours. You will receive a numbered bridge walk certificate at the completion of your walk.

If you have Mackinac Bridge tokens, now is the time to use them. The Mackinac Bridge Authority announced Tuesday that due to dwindling demand, tokens will no longer be accepted at toll lanes starting on Sept. 10, 2019. The MBA said while tokens have long been part of the Mackinac Bridge crossing experience, very few have been redeemed for tolls in recent years. "Most customers still pay tolls with cash, MacPass cards, and increasingly with credit cards." You can still buy tokens, if you'd like to purcahse them for kepsakes.

Officials are releasing details about plans for this years traditional Labor Day walk across the Mackinac Bridge. The Mackinac Bridge Authority says Thursday the 2019 event will again start from both St. Ignace and Mackinaw City on either end of the bridge connecting Michigans Upper and Lower peninsulas. A video on the Mackinac Bridge Authoritys website explains the Sept. 2 options. The Mackinac Bridge Authority last year made big changes to the annual bridge walk, including adding start points at both ends of the bridge to eliminate the need for buses to take people back across. The bridge was closed to most vehicles during the 2017 walk for security reasons.
