A mobility technology company is investing big money in three different locations around Southeast Michigan.

There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench in the job market, but a new automotive plant that focuses on electric cars is hiring engineers, skill traders, IT positions and a whole lot more.

Magna International is breaking ground on a $70 million manufacturing facility in St. Clair, Mich. where it plans to build complex battery enclosures for the all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV. This investment is expected to create 304 jobs in St. Clair over the next five years. AdIn St. Clair, Magna said it plans to construct a 345,000-square-foot facility with the ability to support an expansion of up to 1,000,000 square feet. AdMeanwhile, it was announced earlier this year that the Hummer EV would be built under the GMC brand name at GM’s “Factory Zero” facility at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. That was announced right after GM said it would invest more than $2 billion in Detroit to manufacture electric vehicles.

Speculation of an Apple car came in 2015 when the A123 Systems electric car battery company sued Apple Inc. for poaching some of its employees. Gartner auto analyst Mike Ramsey said the idea of Apple getting into the car business grabs attention. Nobody in the auto industry has ever made those kinds of profit margins. Industry headlines have recently included notions that Ford could possibly build the Apple Car, then Hyundai and now there’s also Canadian auto supplier, Magna. That’s the kind of company that Apple likes to work with and the rest of their business,” Abuelsamid said.

O, The Oprah Magazine is ending its regular monthly print editions with the December 2020 issue after 20 years of publication. Magazines have been trying to grow their digital properties as print advertising shrinks and people spend more time online. The president of Hearst Magazines, Troy Young, resigned abruptly last week after the New York Times reported on sexist comments he made at work. Hearst named its CFO, Debi Chirichella, as acting president of Hearst Magazines, which publishes major magazines including Elle, Esquire, Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping.
