State Conservation officers in southeastern Michigan are seeing snowmobilers riding into open water and falling through ice, said Sgt. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, officers responded Jan. 22 to reports of a drowning after strong winds created a pressure crack in ice over Lake Michigan. “Be aware of the ice conditions before you go out,” Becker said.

The initial order on water protections was signed in late March. The legislation also provides a 25% rebate on total water bills for eligible customers while funding lasts. MDHHS said everyone should avoid eating fish from the Huron River and several connected waterbodies, and avoid foam on Michigan lakes and rivers known to have per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the water. Fish advisoryThe “Do not Eat” fish advisory is based on perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) fish data from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). In August 2018, MDHHS issued a ‘Do Not Eat’ advisory for fish from the Huron River where North Wixom Road crosses into Oakland County to the mouth of the Huron River as it enters Lake Erie in Wayne County. While the state does not have data from Huron River foam, the advisory was issued as a precaution given the available Huron River surface water and fish data.

A sunken boat must be removed from the bottom of Grand Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, according to state officials. Federal and state authorities said Thursday they are working to arrange the salvage operation for the 33-foot-long vessel that sank last month, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy spokesman Nick Assendelft said officials dont want that left in the water.The boat took on water June 19 and sank. The boats owner, Todd Elsenheimer, said he has insurance on the lake cruiser and his plan all along has been to remove it from the bay. The sunken boat continues to be monitored and it does not appear any of the 70 gallons of fuel believed to be on board has leaked, according to the Coast Guard.

The Revere Dock collapsed in November, spilling contaminated soil into the Detroit River. Revere Dock said if their plan is approved, it would take about six months to complete. Officials with the city of Detroit said the company has paid $63,000 to resolve the outstanding violations. Detroit Bulk Storage, who leases the land, still owes the city $62,790.
