The George Jewett Trophy is the first rivalry game trophy named for an African American player in FBS history, according to U of M.Jewett played fullback, halfback and kicker for the Wolverines during the 1890 and 1892 seasons. “We are proud to partner with our peer institution, Northwestern, to recognize and honor an African American pioneer in George Jewett. The George Jewett Trophy will become the 16th rivalry game trophy in the Big Ten. The first George Jewett Trophy game will be Oct. 23, 2021, in Ann Arbor.

Since the student body no longer wanted to attach gender to the roles, the school changed its terminology to "Homecoming Royalty." The Milford High School administration sees this as a decision that will allow the students with the highest number of votes to be celebrated by their peers, regardless of their gender identity. High schools and colleges all over the nation are adopting more neutral language for their winning students. Last week, a Memphis student was crowned Homecoming Royalty, and the week before Purdue University celebrated its own winners by the same name.
