DETROIT – Police in Michigan are working with federal officials to take violent offenders off the street and confiscate illegal guns. Police officers and federal officials are finding illegal guns on many more people. “We don’t want them there if they are illegal,” Schneider said. Nobody would.”As part of Operation Legend, federal officials plan to target violence in America’s most violent cities. Schneider said the reality is that since the expansion of the operation was announced over the summer, local police are working with feds to arrest violent offenders.

The man, Michael Reinoehl, 48, was killed as a federal task force attempted to apprehend him in Lacey, Washington, the official said. Reinoehl was the prime suspect in the killing of 39-year-old Aaron Jay Danielson, who was shot in the chest Saturday night, the official said. During the encounter, Reinoehl was shot by a law enforcement officer who was working on the federal task force, the official said. The official said Reinoehl had pulled a gun during the encounter and was shot by law enforcement. As soon as the adults jumped in, he pulled out a gun, Reinoehl said.

Through the initiative, 41 people have been reportedly charged with federal offenses in Detroit, including narcotics-related and firearms-related offenses. Authorities say that as of August 31, Operation Legend has led to the arrests of more than 2,000 people -- with 476 of them charged with federal offenses -- in participating cities nationwide. One of the groups organized protests against Operation Legend turned violent, leaving a number of protesters injured or in custody. Operation Legend is also currently active in St. Louis, Memphis and Indianapolis as of August. After the Kansas City boy was killed in June by a gunshot meant for somebody else, the Trump administration launched a nationwide crackdown on violent crime named in his honor. The Associated Press obtained access to briefings and law enforcement operations for an inside look at Operation Legend as Barr visited law enforcement officials in Detroit, Kansas City and Cleveland. In Detroit, agents circled a motel that police officials said had been a hotbed for criminal activity for years. As of Friday, there had been 125 homicides in Kansas City this year, according to police statistics. He says the increases in violent crime have been triggered by high unemployment and a lack of services to deal with untreated mental health problems.

DETROIT – More than 40 protesters were taken into custody Saturday night as they blocked off Woodward Avenue between John R. Street and Grand River Avenue. About 100 people gathered on Woodward Avenue in a protest against “Operation Legend” -- an initiative established to address increasing gun and gang violence in cities across the U.S., including in Detroit. The group Detroit Will Breathe has expressed their opposition to the initiative, which brings additional federal agents to Detroit and other participating U.S. cities. Saturday night’s protest in Downtown Detroit went smoothly, for the most part, until about midnight. A Detroit Police Department spokesperson said half of the people arrested were not from the city of Detroit.

DETROIT – Several people were arrested during a protest against Operation Legend on Saturday night in Downtown Detroit. According to the Detroit Police Department, a total of 42 protesters were arrested. The group Detroit Will Breathe organized the protest to speak out against federal agents who were sent by President Donald Trump’s administration to assist with increasing gun violence.
