A woman was driving along I-96 when a man on the Old Plank Road overpass, which is under construction, started throwing sandbags onto the highway, according to authorities. Michigan State Police say a man throwing 40-pound sandbags off an overpass on I-96 in Lyon Township hit a vehicle and injured a woman late Sunday night. (Michigan State Police)The man who threw the sandbag had crashed his truck on I-96, police said. Workers near the overpass said they believe the man grabbed bags that had been holding down caution signs.

The posted detour for northbound I-75 follows westbound I-94, northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway), and eastbound M-8 back to northbound I-75. Southbound I-75 traffic will use westbound M-8 to southbound M-10, back to southbound I-75. The following ramps will close starting 8 p.m. on Friday:Eastbound and westbound M-8 to southbound I-75Holbrook Avenue to southbound I-75Clay Street to southbound I-75Eastbound and westbound I-94 to northbound I-75Warren Avenue to northbound I-75. Crews will be installing bridge beams, which requires a weekend closure of I-75 between I-94 and M-8 starting 9 p.m. on Friday.

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle just after 5 p.m. and struck the right wall, causing the vehicle to go over the overpass and land on the Davison Freeway service drive to I-75. Police said the driver was ejected as the vehicle went off the overpass. The driver, a 25-year-old man from Detroit, was pronounced dead at the scene. The ramp from eastbound Davison Freeway to I-75 and the service drive were closed for several hours during the investigation but have since reopened.

Both directions of I-94 between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday. During the closure westbound I-94 traffic will detour to southbound Gratiot Avenue, the westbound Gratiot Connector and then northbound I-75 back to westbound I-94. All westbound I-94 entrance ramps between Chalmers Street and Chene Street will close at 7 p.m. Friday and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. Officials say eastbound I-94 traffic will detour to southbound I-75, the eastbound Gratiot Connector and then northbound Gratiot Avenue back to I-94.
