For the first time in a presidential election, local clerks in Michigan will be able to preprocess absentee ballots.

According to the Department of State, about 16%, or 1.15 million of Michigan voters have already cast their ballots.

Michigan, a pivotal state in presidential politics, is once again in the spotlight. With just six months to go until the election, numerous polls indicate that this state is a battleground for both candidates, underscoring its crucial role in shaping the nation's future.

Michigan’s attorney general is investigating after a Republican-led state legislative committee said people are making baseless allegations about 2020 presidential election results in a northern Michigan county to raise money or publicity for their own ends.

Former Vice President Mike Pence is defending his role in certifying the results of the 2020 election and says he is proud of his own actions on Jan. 6.

The Georgia Democratic Party has its answer for how the state delivered its electoral votes to Joe Biden for president in November and gave Democrats control of the U.S. Senate with runoff victories two months later.

The group says that if the 10-day audit isn’t granted, they will object to the Electoral College votes that have declared Biden the president-elect. Michigan Republicans are joining the last-ditch effort to overturn the election results. More than 100 Republican House members from the so-called Kraken Caucus are also expected to object to the presidential election results next week. This week, Democratic Senator Gary Peters called objections to the election results deliberate attempts to undermine trust in American elections. Trump and his allies have filed roughly 50 lawsuits challenging election results, and nearly all have been dismissed or dropped.

A Wayne County canvasser is speaking out on Thursday after a woman from New Hampshire was charged with threatening her online. Chair canvasser Monica Palmer says she’s afraid for her life and the lives of her family after receiving violent and threatening messages in November. “You’re not sleeping.”The threats against Palmer are the latest in a year of escalating threats of political violence and intimidation. I can’t go Christmas shopping without fear that somebody’s going to snatch my daughter,” Palmer said. Palmer says that she plans to remain on the Wayne County Board of Canvassers despite recent events.

ANTRIM COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan officials conducted a “risk-limiting” audit of presidential election ballots cast in Antrim County, where a clerical error inspired baseless conspiracies of voter fraud. Antrim County uses software from Dominion Voting Systems, which has a target for conspiracy theories about election fraud this year. Even though the state’s election results have been certified for weeks, Michigan officials still chose to audit Antrim County’s votes on Dec. 17. As a result of the vote audit, Biden lost 1 vote and Trump gained 11 additional votes in Antrim County. “Today’s full audit in Antrim County confirmed the truth and affirmed the facts: Dominion’s voting machines accurately tabulated the votes cast for president in Antrim County,” Benson said on Dec. 17.

Despite that, four Michigan GOP congressmen have signed onto the case and 15 GOP state lawmakers. Nessel and the Attorney Generals of the other states have all filed briefs with the high court. Each member who signed their names on their respective briefs also won their own elections in 2020, which they are now asking to be invalidated.

LANSING, Mich. – President Donald Trump's campaign was handed a unanimous defeat Friday at the Michigan Supreme Court, which declined to hear an appeal about how absentee ballots were handled in Detroit as well as other issues. The court steered it aside with a three-sentence order, the latest in a string of unsuccessful cases challenging how the Nov. 3 election was handled. Joe Biden’s 154,000-vote victory in Michigan was certified by the Board of State Canvassers on Nov. 23. The president's campaign claimed the Republican Party wasn't allowed to get an appropriate number of observers inside a Detroit convention center where absentee ballots were counted. Michigan’s election results faced another round of legal challenges in courts both big and small just four days before the Electoral College is slated to meet and finalize the 2020 election. In the U.S. Supreme Court, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel responded to the state of Texas, which is suing Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia -- three other key states that voted in favor of President-elect Joe Biden. Texas alleged that Michigan broke its own election laws to send absentee ballots to voters during a pandemic, and argued that the court should throw out millions of votes. A federal judge in Michigan has denied a lawsuit seeking to decertify the state’s Nov. 3, 2020 General Election results based on claims of widespread fraud in the distribution, collection, and counting of ballots. Giuliani said the U.S. Constitution empowers legislatures to appoint electors directly, even though the Legislature long ago passed a law allotting them to the popular vote winner. Biden won the state by 2.8 percentage points. “They're the ones who should have the courage to step up,” Giuliani said of lawmakers during a virtual event hosted by the Michigan Republican Party. Giuliani made wild claims of “massive cheating,” particularly by Detroit Democrats, that he said resulted in 500,000 to 700,000 “illegal” votes. Biden won 240,936 votes to Trump's 12,889.

In the August primary election, about 10,600 of 1.6 million absentee ballots (less than 1 percent) were rejected in Michigan. The 3.3 million Michigan absent voter ballots cast this November beat the state’s previous record of 1.6 million votes cast in the Aug. 2020 primary election. A day earlier, Vice President Mike Pence campaigned with Warnock’s opponent, Sen. Kelly Loeffler, and her fellow Republican senator, David Perdue. For Republicans, the pandemic is secondary in a runoff blitz defined by dire warnings about what it would mean if Warnock defeats Loeffler and Perdue falls to Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff. DETROIT – Several Republicans went straight to the Michigan Supreme Court in an effort to try and stop Michigan’s electoral votes from going to President-Elect Joe Biden. Michigan has already certified its election results, but President Donald Trump and his supporters are still hoping to find a way around the process. This latest lawsuit is only one of a few continuing the president and his campaign’s calls to undo an election they lost. Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and the chair of the Board of State Canvassers, Jeannette Bradshaw, who certified Michigan’s election Monday. The suit also comes after Trump falsely claimed the election results in Detroit were fake during a Thanksgiving address to members of the military stationed overseas.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Democrats once dominated Koochiching County in the blue-collar Iron Range of northern Minnesota. But in this month's presidential election, President Donald Trump won it with 60% of the vote. Though Democrats’ rural woes aren’t new, they now heap pressure on Biden to begin reversing the trend. In clinging to their majority, House Democrats lost rural seats, notably the one held for 30 years by Rep. Collin Peterson in western Minnesota. The vote to certify Michigan’s election results comes nearly three weeks since Election Day. Despite Joe Biden’s lead over President Donald Trump by hundreds of thousands of votes, House Speaker Lee Chatfield spoke of the believed dangers that could follow a split decision on the Michigan Board of State Canvassers. In an interview with Fox News Sunday morning Republican and Michigan House Speaker, Lee Chatfield, talked about the possibility of a “constitutional crisis” ahead of the Michigan Board of State Canvassers scheduled Monday meeting to certify election results.

DETROIT – A group of Detroit voters are now suing the Trump Campaign, claiming it’s trying to disenfranchise Black voters in their attempt to block the certification of votes in Wayne County. The lawsuit Anthony is talking about is 18 pages long. The plaintiffs are several local Detroit voters, along with the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization. They are suing Donald Trump and his campaign, claiming they’re trying to disenfranchise Black voters by trying to block the certification of votes in Wayne County. DETROIT – Three Detroit voters have joined a local organization in suing President Trump and his campaign over their effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Wayne County Board of Canvassers certifies results despite initial deadlockThe lawsuit comes days after two GOP members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers initially voted not to certify the votes, citing discrepancies in the county’s numbers. The pair changed their minds again, however, after President Trump called them personally on Tuesday evening after the certification process. Still, some argue that their meeting with the president so close to the state’s certification meeting is concerning. We expect the State Board of Canvassers to do its job and count the votes.”The Michigan Board of State Canvassers is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. on Monday.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers is expected to certify the results of the 2020 election on Monday, Nov. 23. Several legal experts and local leaders say the state’s certification of votes is simply the next step in the process and should carry on normally, despite drama over the certification process in Wayne County this week. On Wednesday, Palmer and Hartmann filed affidavits saying they believed the county vote “should not be certified” in an attempt to rescind their decision. Michigan officials say that there is no legal mechanism in place for the members to change their vote following certification. “I’m not worried about any attempts for them to cast out Wayne County,” said Detroit NAACP Executive Director Kamilia Landrum.

The Associated Press is projecting that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden won the state of Georgia in the General Election. As of 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, AP is calling the presidential race in the state of Georgia in favor of Joe Biden. Biden will receive 16 electoral votes from Georgia -- however, a candidate is allowed to request a recount in Georgia if the margin is within 0.5 percentage points. As of Thursday, Biden leads over Trump in Georgia by more than 12,000 votes, which is a 0.25 percent difference. A presidential candidate requires at least 270 electoral votes to win the election -- which Biden surpassed after winning the state of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Election officials in Georgia's 159 counties are undertaking a hand tally of the presidential race that stems from an audit required by state law. The complete hand recount stemmed from an audit required by a new state law and wasn’t in response to any suspected problems with the state’s results or an official recount request. The secretary of state’s office has until Friday at 5 p.m. to certify the election results. While not formally a recount under the letter of state law, the hand tally conducted to complete the audit was effectively a recount in practice. Votes that hadn't previously been counted were found in several counties during the audit, which required recertification of the election results in those counties.

It was another weekend of President Donald Trump supporters protesting against the election results. "We don’t feel that the election is fair.”Although a slightly smaller crowd in Downtown Detroit, Biden supporters had a different message. Recently, several lawsuits claiming election fraud on behalf of Donald Trump were thrown out in several states, including Michigan. Biden supporters said it’s time to move on.

DETROIT – As the results of the 2020 election face challenges, two of Michigan’s members or soon-to-be members of congress have differing ideas about how the election played out, despite being congressional neighbors. “I think we should pause,” newcomer and Congresswoman-Elect Lisa McClain said, casting doubt on Michigan’s election process. “I think is the key is let’s make sure that we have a process that works. Pointing to the state of Florida, which broke for the President and counted votes quickly compared to other swing states. The example calling into question states like Pennsylvania, Arizona and Michigan were ballots after election night.

The legal blows began when a federal appeals court rejected an effort to block about 9,300 mail-in ballots that arrived after Election Day in Pennsylvania. A Philadelphia judge found none as he refused late Friday to reject about 8,300 mail-in ballots there. Porter Wright filed the motion Thursday, as criticism grew that law firms backing the Republican election challenges were helping Trump defy the will of the American people. Porter Wright, which has earned more than $700,000 from the Trump campaign, appeared to take down its Twitter feed Tuesday after it was inundated with attacks. The firm did not reply to specific questions about the posts or whether it would stop representing the Trump campaign entirely.

Right now, across the country, election officials are reviewing and double checking the entire election process prior to finalizing the result. There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised. In Michigan, Trump and his team have filed a lawsuit in an effort to halt the state’s certification of its election results. DETROIT – Hoping to halt a statewide certification of Michigan election results, the latest lawsuit by President Donald Trump’s campaign submitted hundreds of claims asserting GOP poll watchers were excluded from counting rooms or saw illegal activity in the count in the state. Inside the lawsuit are 234 pages of affidavits from people claiming to have been Republican poll watchers who witnessed or were told about misconduct by mostly Detroit ballot counters. As incumbent Sen. Gary Peters is declaring victory, Republican challenger John James is not ready to concede. In a statement Thursday, James said, “This campaign is not about me, it never has been. While Sen. Peters is currently ahead, I have deep concerns that millions of Michiganders may have been disenfranchised by a dishonest few who cheat." James also said he will accept the votes “and the will of the people” when the process is complete. If you have character and if you have integrity, you do it gracefully," Peters later said.

In Arizona, as Joe Biden’s lead began to dwindle, Trump supporters showed up and chanted, “continue the count.”Local 4 spoke to Oakland University professors Dave Dulio, the director of Civic Engagement and professor of political science and professor Erin Dwyer from the Department of History. Many people were trying to get inside the counting locations to try to stop officials from counting. In Michigan, 82 of the 83 counties have completed counting their ballots. The Trump team had filed a lawsuit in Michigan to stop the counting, because they felt that it was not fair and legal. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said that the counting was completed and there wasn’t anything to stop.

BELLAIRE, Mich. – As of 9 a.m. Thursday, Antrim County is the only county in Michigan that doesn’t have election results in. The county’s website has election results from its May election, the August and March primaries, and the November 2019 election. Between 1884 and 2016, Antrim County voters have selected Republican candidates in 32 of the 34 national elections. “The priority is to make sure every vote is counted correctly,” said Antrim County public information officer Jeremy Scott. The political reversal of Antrim County warrants a more thorough pair of eyes to see if there was a computer or human error in the count.

As ballots are still being counted throughout the state of Michigan, tensions ran high in the “counting room” at the TCF Center in Detroit Wednesday afternoon. Supporters of President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump swarmed the TCF Center on Wednesday in an effort to enter the counting room and watch the ballot-counting process. In Michigan, citizens are allowed to observe the ballot-counting process to ensure everything is being counted fairly and accurately. Biden support Yolanda Moore was part of the crowd at the TCF Center Wednesday. Both Benson and Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey said the demonstrations at the TCF Center were just distractions from completing the counting.

DETROIT – People representing both the GOP and the Democratic Party gathered at the TCF Center in Detroit on Wednesday to demand access to the room in which General Election ballots are still being counted. Under Michigan law, a number of individuals are allowed to observe the ballot-counting process to ensure transparency. That is still allowed during the 2020 presidential election, but there are more restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. The number of “watchers” allowed to partake in the process has been limited. There is no evidence of any nefarious activity in Michigan, as ballot counting delays were expected, given the massive increase in absentee voting.
