Most of the tickets written from May 31 through June 2 were for curfew violations as hundreds of people demonstrated in downtown Detroit. The city expects to dismiss 238 of the 245 tickets issued on those three days, Detroit Corporation Counsel Lawrence Garcia said. Dozens of demonstrators received appearance citations for violating the city’s 8 p.m. curfew, Garcia said in a statement. Prosecutors in Los Angeles also decided not to charge thousands of protesters arrested for violating curfew and other police orders.

DETROIT – Members of the Detroit Eviction Defense and Detroit Will Breathe peacefully demonstrated Saturday outside the Detroit Police Department’s 10th Precinct. The demonstration started at noon. The protesters called for justice and said Whitney Burney and her family were illegally evicted by their landlord in December with the help of Detroit police officers. Detroit police said the eviction should not have happened and the city is working to find a home for Burney and her four children. Demonstrators have held multiple protests in Shelby Township after Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide made racist comments about protests on social media. They were violating people.”Detroit Will Breathe reported a woman who was protesting was strip searched by the Shelby police. Detroit Will Breathe said protesters they marched to the Shelby Township Police Department for jail support -- to check on detainees, see if they post bail and have a lawyer -- where they said they were attacked by police. Shelby police said they would release its footage of the protest soon.

DETROIT – A group of more than 100 protestors gathered outside the Detroit Police Department headquarters Wednesday before marching through downtown Detroit, calling for justice in Breonna Taylor’s death. The protest came in response to the announcement that a Kentucky grand jury did not indict Louisville police on charges directly related to Taylor’s death and one of the officers was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment. ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Resident advisors at the University of Michigan have ended their nearly two-week strike after reaching a deal with the university. Residential Staff members demanded more protections including regular access to testing for all residence staff, and enforcement of the university mask and social distancing mandates in dining and residence halls. ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Members of the Graduate Employee’s Organization (GEO) voted Wednesday to accept the University of Michigan’s latest offer regarding issues of mutual concern and end their strike. The university and GEO union announced the strike end Thursday morning. “GEO said its members would return to their duties beginning this morning,” reads a statement from the university. At our largest general membership meeting to date, 1,074 GEO members voted to accept the university’s offer, 239 members voted to reject, and 66 abstained. GEO members and supporters now return to our regular work duties.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – On Friday, undergraduate students at the University of Michigan voiced support for graduate students and resident advisors on strike through a solidarity protest and march. More than 250 undergraduates and members of Students Demand Representation, a U-M student activist organization, listened to speeches given from the steps of the Michigan Union about labor unions and the safety of university workers. After the speeches, undergraduate students marched through downtown Ann Arbor and across campus to join those on strike and to support U-M Dining employees who staged a walkout last week. On Monday afternoon, University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel said through video that the university has taken legal action against the strike. DETROIT – Residents of a historic east side Detroit neighborhood rallied to change it’s name Saturday. Indian Village residents gathered to discuss changing the name. Jared Tenbrink, a member of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, has lived in the neighborhood for almost a decade. “We should consider coming up with a new name that better reflects our values, our history and what we want this neighborhood to be going forward as an inclusive neighborhood,” Tenbrink said. Residents said they’ll have to get a petition signed by residents to send to the city.

DETROIT Some residents on Detroits east side came together to protest a homeless shelter in their community. They said that all you have to do is look around and see whats been done to the community because of the local resource for the homeless. No more trash in our streets, no more garbage out in the street, Reverend Aaron McCarthy said. Community members said that Team Wellness Center, a shelter and safe haven for the homeless, is hurting their community. Local 4 reached out to Team Wellness Center for comment.

DETROIT – More than 40 protesters were taken into custody Saturday night as they blocked off Woodward Avenue between John R. Street and Grand River Avenue. About 100 people gathered on Woodward Avenue in a protest against “Operation Legend” -- an initiative established to address increasing gun and gang violence in cities across the U.S., including in Detroit. The group Detroit Will Breathe has expressed their opposition to the initiative, which brings additional federal agents to Detroit and other participating U.S. cities. Saturday night’s protest in Downtown Detroit went smoothly, for the most part, until about midnight. A Detroit Police Department spokesperson said half of the people arrested were not from the city of Detroit.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – An MLive reporter was arrested while covering a rally that turned violent in Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon, according to reports online. Members of the far-right group “Proud Boys” reportedly clashed with counter-protesters during a scheduled demonstration in the area of E. Water and N. Edward streets, WOOD-TV reports. (Language warning) Far-right group Proud Boys and counter-protesters meet in downtown Kalamazoo. Proud Boys are attacking counter protesters, spraying pepper spray. The Proud Boys have largely cleared out, overwhelmed by counter-protesters.

The OPEIU Local 40 Nurses Union were out Sunday at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital. They were picketing over what they call bad-faith negotiations and accused the hospital of union busting, putting financial pressure on nurses by not deducting dues. The union said its been almost a year since contract negotiations started. Protests have been taking place in Harper Woods over the death of 37-year-old Priscilla Slater. Slater was found unresponsive inside a holding cell on June 10 in Harper Woods. In recent weeks there have been a handful of counter protesters, people who support the Shelby Township Police Department and president Donald Trump. OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. An overnight protest is underway outside Childrens Village in Oakland County where dozens are demanding the release of a 15-year-old called Grace.She is the girl who has made national headlines after being placed in juvenile custody for probation violations, the terms of which included having to finish her school work. The defense in the case has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A well-known activist was arrested on Wednesday night in Shelby Township. Rideout was arrested in connection with Monday’s protest outside the police station. Rideout and dozens of other protesters blocked the intersection of 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke. They were calling for police chief Robert Shelide to be fired for social media comments he made about the George Floyd protests. SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide is back on the job after being suspended for comments he made on social media about the George Floyd protests. Shelide returned to work on Friday and protesters showed up on Monday in opposition. At one point, protesters shut down a major intersection. On Monday, protesters marched up and down Van Dyke. The march culminated at Van Dyke and 23 Mile Road, where protesters shut the intersection down.

DETROIT After days of protests that ended in arrests on Thursday, the fight over in-person summer classes in Detroit is headed to court. A decision Friday, if its made, could stop summer school in Detroit amid the coronavirus pandemic. Summer school in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) began Monday. It seeks to sop summer school. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said the district is following all CDC guidelines and stresses summer school is completely voluntary.

This time protesters were blocking buses at a yard in the 12600 block of Westwood Street near Evergreen Road and I-96 on the citys west side. After the arrests, school buses were able to leave the bus garage to go pick up kids for summer school. In-person summer school is being offered at 25 facilities. BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. A teenage girl was sent back to juvenile detention for not completing her homework and protesters are calling it racial discrimination. The controversy centers around a Wylie E. Groves High School student who got caught up in the juvenile justice system. A judge decided the teen, named Grace, violated her probation by not completing online schoolwork and sent her to juvenile detention. I know if Grace was a 15-year-old White girl she would not be sitting in juvenile detention right now, said Sheri Crawley. Then she broke down when she heard Oakland County Family Court presiding judge Mary Ellen Brennan sent Grace to juvenile detention for violating her probation by not finishing her online school work.

Dozens of people are protesting in-person summer school being offered in the district. They feel it is unsafe amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The protesters are at Greenfield Road near Joy Road on Detroit’s west side. On Monday, 20 percent of students missed their bus due to the protests.

Some employees are asking the automaker to stop building and selling police vehicles. First reported Wednesday by automotive website Jalopnik, as many as 100 Ford employees called for the automaker to stop making vehicles for police departments. In the letter, employees cite images of officers in Ford police vehicles driving through crowds of protestors and deploying chemical agents. Employees told Ford executives, We are long overdue to think and act differently on our role in racism.The auto giant has produced vehicles used by law enforcement since the 1950s. In response, Ford CEO Jim Hackett and President Bill Ford said Black Lives Matter and they are reviewing the companys diversity, but sales of police vehicles will continue.

MONROE, Mich. Protesters are pushing for the removal of the statue of General George Custer. Across the country, statues have been removed.
