The tickets were issued while Detroit was under a curfew that required people to stay off city streets after 8 p.m. unless they were going to the doctor, drug store or grocery store. After a review, a majority of misdemeanor tickets issued on May 31 and June 2 will be dismissed. DETROIT – A group of more than 100 protestors gathered outside the Detroit Police Department headquarters Wednesday before marching through downtown Detroit, calling for justice in Breonna Taylor’s death. The protest came in response to the announcement that a Kentucky grand jury did not indict Louisville police on charges directly related to Taylor’s death and one of the officers was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment. WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has cleared a Washtenaw County deputy involved in a rough arrest that led to days of protests. A deputy with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office was accused of striking a woman at a shooting scene three times in her head. The allegations sparked charges of racism and police brutality and led to four days of protests against the department. Nessel said her office would review any allegations of police misconduct and brutality, and investigation revealed the woman making the claims, Sha’Teina Grady, was the person using force against the deputy, according to authorities. Grady inflicted severe injuries on the deputy after she was asked to stop interfering with their investigation, officials said.

The changes come 10 days after 44 violent arrests of protesters in Detroit. I just remember this dush, dush, dush of them kneeing my hand. In addition to a duty to intervene when other officers are using excessive force, officers cannot use chokeholds or fire a weapon from moving vehicles. I dont think they care about the rules, Naya said.

For the first seven days of protests in Detroit, everyone involved got to know the voice of Gabrielle Wilson. But she’s no longer protesting because she thinks she can have more of an impact by creating a nonprofit organization for middle class Black families. “I am one of them.”Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Wilson got his attention during the protests. Local 4 has heard from other protesters who have stopped because more aggressive groups pushed them to the side, criticizing them for wanting peaceful protests.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Members of the far-right Proud Boys group and counter-protesters clashed violently Saturday afternoon in western Michigan, resulting in arrests, police said. Counter-protesters staged their own event in the area at the same time as the rally that the Proud Boys had planned, according to local media reports. When the Proud Boys arrived, the confrontation ensued. A reporter for MLive.com, who was detained by police while recording live on Facebook, reported that some of the Proud Boys also used pepper spray on people. The male-only Proud Boys has been called extremist by the Anti-Defamation League and described as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Thursdays protest was about the online learning teachers want instead of in-person learning, and so they have been very serious about their social distancing. Knowing that Detroits superintendent, Dr. Nikolai Vitti, is pushing hard for in-person learning, she sees more practical problems. TRENTON, Mich. Its another chapter of the ongoing battle on what to do with the McLouth Steel Site, Downriver in Trenton. About two dozen people protested outside Trenton City Hall Sunday afternoon voicing their concerns against what they said is a decision that will harm the future of Trenton. The former Steel Site is now owned by Crown Enterprises which is a subsidiary of the Moroun Family. Trenton City Council is supposed to vote on the topic Monday night at 7 p.m.

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – The mayor of Harper Woods, Kenneth Poynter, has turned in a letter of resignation. Protests have been taking place in Harper Woods over the death of 37-year-old Priscilla Slater. Slater was found unresponsive inside a holding cell on June 10 in Harper Woods. SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Another tense night in Shelby Township as protesters stood outside township offices and marched. In recent weeks there have been a handful of counter protesters, people who support the Shelby Township Police Department and president Donald Trump. Shelby Township police made it clear to protesters that they would not tolerate anyone in the street stopping traffic. OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. An overnight protest is underway outside Childrens Village in Oakland County where dozens are demanding the release of a 15-year-old called Grace.She is the girl who has made national headlines after being placed in juvenile custody for probation violations, the terms of which included having to finish her school work. The judge said the teen would be better served staying inside the center for troubled kids. There were about 100 protesters outside the facility on Wednesday night. The defense in the case has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals.

DETROIT Stephanie Broddie is a teacher, a life long Detroiter and someone who cares deeply about her community. She barely stands five feet tall, but she managed to keep a protest peaceful with just her presence. My uncle used to work at that precinct, so all I can think is Are you guys serious? Broddie isnt used to being in the spotlight, but she regularly gives back to the community. She teaches robotics and other STEM based programs to children in Detroit.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A well-known activist was arrested on Wednesday night in Shelby Township. Rideout was arrested in connection with Monday’s protest outside the police station. Rideout and dozens of other protesters blocked the intersection of 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke. They were calling for police chief Robert Shelide to be fired for social media comments he made about the George Floyd protests. SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide is back on the job after being suspended for comments he made on social media about the George Floyd protests. Shelide returned to work on Friday and protesters showed up on Monday in opposition. At one point, protesters shut down a major intersection. On Monday, protesters marched up and down Van Dyke. The march culminated at Van Dyke and 23 Mile Road, where protesters shut the intersection down.

Shelide was suspended in June, he was ordered to go 30 days without pay and was ordered to go to cultural and sensitivity training. The township supervisor said that the Tweets were unprofessional and could be considered racially insensitive and derogatory.

DETROIT Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit Police Corporal Daniel Debono, 32, in connection with a shooting involving three photojournalists and non-fatal ammunition. The photojournalists were targeted in late May while covering a Detroit George Floyd protest. Journalists from other local media outlets including The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press were met with aggression while covering the protests. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan apologized to local journalists who were targeted by police while covering the protests. After reports surfaced of reporters being targeted Duggan vowed to make adjustments to use every opportunity to keep them safe.

DETROIT Nearly a dozen arrests of people protesting in-person summer school allegedly disrupted the bus schedule on Thursday. It led to some students caught in the rain and a 9-year-old girl left alone for more than a half an hour in a west side neighborhood. In order to get to her school Taylor Davis is picked up near her home and minutes later transfers to another bus at Dixon Elementary. BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. A teenage girl was sent back to juvenile detention for not completing her homework and protesters are calling it racial discrimination. The controversy centers around a Wylie E. Groves High School student who got caught up in the juvenile justice system. A judge decided the teen, named Grace, violated her probation by not completing online schoolwork and sent her to juvenile detention. I know if Grace was a 15-year-old White girl she would not be sitting in juvenile detention right now, said Sheri Crawley. Then she broke down when she heard Oakland County Family Court presiding judge Mary Ellen Brennan sent Grace to juvenile detention for violating her probation by not finishing her online school work.

DETROIT Nearly a dozen protesters were arrested for blocking school buses from picking up children for summer school classes on Thursday in Detroit. Protesters were blocking buses at a yard in the 12600 block of Westwood Street near Evergreen Road and I-96 on the citys west side. All this following an attempt to block driver from busing children to school in the midst of the pandemic. In-person summer school is being offered at 25 facilities. After the arrests, school buses were able to leave the bus garage to go pick up kids for summer school.

Dozens of people are protesting in-person summer school being offered in the district. They feel it is unsafe amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The protesters are at Greenfield Road near Joy Road on Detroit’s west side. On Monday, 20 percent of students missed their bus due to the protests.

DETROIT Police announced Sunday they have launched an investigation into the use of a choke hold on a protester. The investigation was in response of a photo of Detroit Will Breathe organizer Nakia Wallace being restrained with a chokehold Friday. Three officers took me to the ground and after I was already on the ground one, of them put me in a choke hold, Wallace recalled. William Meeko Williams was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer. The organization will hold a protest Monday outside the Detroit Detention Center to continue to call for his release.

Hakim Littleton’s older brother, Rashad Littleton-Schaefer, spoke out against what he calls a crime before a group of protesters organized by Detroit Will Breathe. “I want Chief James Craig to stop lying because he’s not making any sense. Police chief James Craig spoke on the matter Saturday morning where it was stated that he still stands behind his officers and their decision to pull the trigger. It certainly was a threat to that of his own life and that of his partners,” said Chief James Craig. “I really wanna meet with James Craig, the mayor of Detroit by next week.

Some employees are asking the automaker to stop building and selling police vehicles. First reported Wednesday by automotive website Jalopnik, as many as 100 Ford employees called for the automaker to stop making vehicles for police departments. In the letter, employees cite images of officers in Ford police vehicles driving through crowds of protestors and deploying chemical agents. Employees told Ford executives, We are long overdue to think and act differently on our role in racism.The auto giant has produced vehicles used by law enforcement since the 1950s. In response, Ford CEO Jim Hackett and President Bill Ford said Black Lives Matter and they are reviewing the companys diversity, but sales of police vehicles will continue.

DETROIT – Protests in response to a fatal officer-involved shooting Friday resulted in the arrests of eight people. People gathered at the site hours after 20-year-old Hakim Littleton was shot and killed on Detroit’s west side. During a Friday evening press conference, the Detroit Police Department released body camera footage of the incident to combat rumors on social media that police killed an unarmed teenager. Detroit Will Breathe released a statement Saturday criticizing Detroit police’s decision to have officers in riot gear in response to demonstrators who marched Friday. Detroit Will Breathe said it should be standard that footage of officer-involved shootings be released the day of the incident, as well as the names and records of officers involved.

DETROIT – A total of eight arrests were made Friday during a protest over the shooting death of 20-year-old Hakim Littleton, according to the Detroit Police Department. The victim was shot and killed by police Friday afternoon. Large crowds filled the streets hours later demanding answers and protesting. Graphic video of the shooting showed Littleton firing shots at officers. Detroit Police Chief James Craig made an appearance on Local 4 News Saturday morning where he answered questions about the shooting.

DETROIT – A protest prompted by an officer involved shooting attracted large crowds in Detroit Friday. According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, officers were looking for a person involved in a Fourth of July shooting that left five people hurt and three others dead. Video of the shooting shown at the press conference showed Littleton was armed with a 25 caliber blue steel semi automatic pistol. He also noted that a group was present at the scene of the shooting and threw rocks and bottles at officers. I commend Chief Craig for moving so quickly to release the video publicly,” said Duggan in the statement.

Todays shooting incident involving the tragic death of young Mr. Hakim Littleton by a Detroit Police officer is indeed heartbreaking. We are also very pleased that none of the officers involved in the incident were seriously injured nor did it result in a fatality among their ranks.
