In that scenario, Michigan would end 2022 with 152,000 fewer jobs than it had in the first quarter of 2020โa 3.4% shortfall. In level terms, personal income in 2022 is expected to come in 5.8% higher than in 2019. They forecast a recovery of 22,600 jobs in 2021 and 13,300 in 2022.

A committee within the National Bureau of Economic Research, a trade group, determines when recessions begin and end. In the previous recession, the committee did not declare that the economy was in recession until December 2008, a year after it had actually begun. A recession ends when employment and output start to pick up again, not when they reach their pre-recession levels. So it's possible that the recession could technically end soon.
