The Detroit Lions released this statement on Tuesday:“As a result of a False-Positive test result, he was forced due to NFL/NFLPA protocols to sit out until he received two negative tests. His testing sequence for the Pre-Entry period was: negative, negative, False-Positive. To be clear, Matthew does NOT have COVID-19 and never has had COVID-19 and the test in question was a False-Positive. Sports Illustrated reported that he tested positive for COVID-19.

NFL players can be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 without testing positive if they have had close contact with someone who is sick. Stafford received a test Friday, when he was asymptomatic, meaning he passed tests on Tuesday and Wednesday, SI said. A positive result from Fridays test landed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list, according to SI. Kenny Golladay, T.J. Hockenson, Justin Coleman, Isaac Nauta, Amani Oruwariye, Jalen Elliott and Arryn Siposs are also on the reserve/COVID-19 list for Detroit.
