Main Street for second time during relining projectANN ARBOR – An estimated 50 gallons of sanitary sewage was released onto South Main Street on Wednesday morning after a contractor’s attempt to divert the sanitary sewer flow failed. This is the second incident to occur at the same site since Feb. 22, when an estimated 10,000 gallons of sewage was released onto South Main Street as a result of a failure during an ongoing sanitary sewer relining project. “The pipe was diverting sanitary sewer flow while the contractor cleaned the sanitary sewer main in advance of lining the pipe,” reads a news release. The contractor will be charged with all costs to the city related to the incident. The city of Ann Arbor notified the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy of the incident, in accordance with protocols.

It allows MDOT to sell $3.5 billion in bonds to finance dozens of new and modified road construction projects, while accelerating many others, the state said. “The Rebuilding Michigan Program allows MDOT to completely rebuild some important freeways that we otherwise could only afford to resurface,” MDOT Director Paul C. Ajegba said.

The city has posted this detour map so drivers are aware of what to expect. The closure will only affect a one-block stretch of road, but with Main Street being a major thoroughfare, the detours may slightly slow your commute. Access will be maintained for local businesses at all times during the construction work while pedestrians will also be detoured along the same route as vehicles. Emergency vehicles are also advised to take the posted detour below:

Liberty Street will be near the intersection of First Street starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday for road paving. Cars traveling on Liberty westbound will be detoured south onto Main Street, west onto William Street and north onto Second Street and then back onto Liberty. Cars traveling eastbound will be detoured south onto Second Street, east onto William Street, north onto Ashley Street and then back onto Liberty. Traffic between First and Main streets, Second and First streets and pedestrian traffic on one side of the street will be maintained.

After dealing with construction for nearly a year, the avenue on Detroit’s west side will soon be able to say goodbye to all those orange barrels. Business owners said the construction really hurt their businesses. The area at 7 Mile Road and Livernois Avenue was a giant construction zone and businesses started asking for help. The sidewalks are much wider, there’s new lighting and business owners are more than happy the construction has finished.
