Tony Hawk is known worldwide, not just for what he can do with a skateboard, but for his skateboard project that has given over $10 million to 600 skatepark projects, including right here in Detroit.

Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk stopped in Detroit this weekend to celebrate the grand reopening of the Chandler Park Skatepark on the city’s east side.

Victor Williams featured his skateboarding skills in a live standup in a story about Chandler Skatepark and that video went viral earlier this year.

Those of us who know Victor Williams here at WDIV-Local 4 and ClickOnDetroit are well aware of his skateboarding skills.

DETROIT – With a grand opening featuring the most popular skateboarder in the world, Tony Hawk, Wayfinding Park was once a great skatepark located in the heart of Downtown Detroit. “The Wayfinding park was a temporary park downtown near Campus Martius that we built a few years ago. And it was a very small park but it served the community well for a couple of years,” said Modern Skateshop and Skatepark owner, George Leichtweis. The ramps have all been stored at the skatepark. Leichtweis is one of several people behind placing the once used ramps in an underprivileged part of town.
