(AP Photo/Paul Sancya, File)Detroit will dismiss most misdemeanor citations issued last spring during several days of protests against police brutality following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, a city official said Tuesday. Most of the tickets written from May 31 through June 2 were for curfew violations as hundreds of people demonstrated in downtown Detroit. The city expects to dismiss 238 of the 245 tickets issued on those three days, Detroit Corporation Counsel Lawrence Garcia said. Dozens of demonstrators received appearance citations for violating the city’s 8 p.m. curfew, Garcia said in a statement. Prosecutors in Los Angeles also decided not to charge thousands of protesters arrested for violating curfew and other police orders.

“I’m inspired when I see the number of young Blacks and Whites who are part of the Black Lives Matter movement,” Rev. DeLashea Strawder, director of Detroit’s Mosaic Youth Theater, believes there has been progress. “There’s nothing wrong with that -- nothing wrong with good, strong, healthy debate.”“Of course, we’re not going to always agree, and that’s OK,” Strawder said. “My dream would be for everybody to be just equal,” said Makiah Quinn, a Mosaic Youth Theater member. “I don’t think that’s too much to ask.”Anthony had much more to say.

DETROIT The Detroit Tigers game agains the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night has been canceled after Twins players voted not to play due to social injustice. On Twitter, the team announced the game will be made up Friday as part of a traditional doubleheader. The first game will start at 1:10 p.m. and both games will be seven innings long, the Tigers announced. The Milwaukee Bucks were the first team to boycott a game, starting a domino effect that led to all NBA playoff games being postponed Wednesday and Thursday. The Tigers played their series finale against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night before Thursdays game was canceled.

New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday and his wife Lauren recently launched the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund, which is funded by the rest of Holidays checks from the NBA. With Holiday expected to receive up to $5 million during the remainder of the NBA season, he has dedicated the funds to black-owned businesses, black and brown organizations and historically black colleges and universities. Up to $1.5 million in Los Angeles and Compton which is where Jrue and the Holiday family is from. $500,000 to colleges and universities which includes historically Black colleges and universities. The Holidays garnered inspiration from the recent Black Lives Matter protests and racial injustices that occurred to provide this resource for Black and Brown communities.

The Michigan branch of NextGen America is hosting a virtual performance Saturday with Flint-based musician Tunde Olaniran as part of their Pride Week of Action.The musician is expected to offer a new performance created specifically for the event. The Nigerian-born, Flint-based musician is known for their unique and eclectic sound, fusing fast dance, electronic and hip-hop styles with socially-conscious lyrics. Olanirans first album, Transgressor, debuted in 2015 and their latest album, Stranger, was released in 2018. The musician has been featured on NPRs All Songs Considered and in New Yorker and PitchFork magazines, among others. DETROIT City leaders addressed a range of topics at a press briefing Monday from protests, the establishment of a community health corps to $31 million in federal funding for housing security. Duggan announced the establishment of what he referred to as a community health corps. I envision a community health corps, said Duggan. Both Duggan and director of Housing and Revitalization, Donald Rencher, are hopeful that the Detroit City Council adopts the proposal quickly. In regards to the coronavirus Duggan encouraged Detroit residents to continue wearing masks and practicing social distancing despite recent progress.

DETROIT Black mothers recently spoke openly about race and have a message to share about what parents need to know. She believes white people need to have conversations with their children about what it means to have a black friend. The whole idea of White privilege has come to the surface as the movement toward racial equality and social justice gains momentum. We are black mothers are at much greater risk of dying during childbirth than white counterparts. So heres the message I like to relay is that I dont want to hear that white people are uncomfortable anymore.

ANN ARBOR In 2015, the Mens Glee Club at the University of Michigan debuted a powerful multimovement work titled Seven Last Words of the Unarmed by Atlanta-based composer Joel Thompson. Although the project is five years old, many are revisiting and discovering the work following the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. People have been sharing it again and reaching out -- it has been really overwhelming.Rogers is currently the director of choral activities at the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
