A joint venture between GM and LG Chem currently is building a $2 billion battery factory in Lordstown, Ohio, near Cleveland, that will employ about 1,000 people. The Wall Street Journal first reported that GM and LG Chem are pursuing a site in Tennessee to build a new battery plant. Last year full battery electric vehicles accounted for only 2% of the U.S. market of 14.6 million in new vehicle sales.

The company will build the Cadillac Lyriq, a small electric SUV, at the Spring Hill factory. The paint and body shops at Spring Hill will see major expansions, and the general assembly area will get new machinery, conveyors, controls and other equipment. Also, the Orion Township plant will get $3.5 million and a plant in Brownstown Township, Michigan, will get $750,000, both to help build a test vehicle for the Cruise autonomous vehicle unit. Over the past 19 months, GM has announced investments of more than $4.5 billion at the three future electric vehicle factories.

The consulting firm LMC Automotive predicted that the Lyriq, the company's first electric SUV, will be built in Spring Hill. That means Spring Hill is likely to be the company's third electric vehicle factory. LMC Senior Vice President Jeff Schuster said he expects GM to build other electric vehicles at Spring Hill as well. The Detroit News reported on Friday that the Lyriq would be built at Spring Hill.

General Motors said Wednesday it will lay off 680 workers at its Tennessee assembly plant and eliminate the facilitys third shift, moves the company says are due to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement about the Spring Hill plant, General Motors said it believes the best way to react to the unforeseen change in market conditions due to COVID-19 is to reduce output and continue to operate on two shifts effective immediately. The plant employs 3,700 people total and has union representation through the United Auto Workers. GM and other automakers temporarily shut down U.S. factories starting in March due to COVID-19. The Spring Hill facilitys first shift went back on May 18, and the second shift returned June 1.
