Director Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” starring Andra Day as the jazz singer, was named best picture, while the Korean American family drama “Minari” got best intergenerational film. “We focus on films made by and for grownups,” said Tim Appelo, the film and television critic for AARP. Catherine O’Hara took best actress for “Schitt’s Creek,” Mark Ruffalo got best actor for “I Know This Much is True” and “This Is Us” was named best series.

In "Supernova," Tucci plays a man slipping into dementia taking a possibly final road trip with his longtime partner, played by Colin Firth. In “Supernova,” Tucci plays Tusker, a novelist on the edge of early on-set dementia. Speaking by video conference from London, Tucci mused that he might celebrate the film's premiere by a Zoom with Firth, over Negronis. I cooked for Colin when I did “Supernova.” We’ve been friends for a long time so we’re in each other’s kitchens. I’m older but I’m not old yet, I don’t think.

Movie critic Greg Russell is back with his thoughts on Supernova and The Little Things, the latest two movies from a cast of Academy Award-winning actors. First Russell took a look at Supernova, a drama that follows Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth after many years of living together as a couple. Russell got to speak with Tucci, who said he prepared for the role by watching documentaries and learning from real people. In the film, Washington plays a cop who winds up investigating a crime in the heart of LA, but as he uncovers pieces of the case, they start to hit close to home. Hubble astronomers were using the supernova as part of a program to precisely measure the expansion rate of the universe — a key value in understanding the physical underpinnings of the cosmos. The supernova serves as a milepost marker to measure galaxy distances, a fundamental value needed for measuring the expansion of space. In the time-lapse sequence, spanning nearly a year, the supernova first appears as a blazing star located on the galaxy’s outer edge. This allows astronomers to measure the expansion rate of the universe. Over the past 30 years Hubble has helped dramatically improve the precision of the universe’s expansion rate.
