DETROIT – On Tuesday, the Washtenaw County Health Department announced seven close contacts of the first person to carry a COVID-19 variant in Michigan have been identified and are being tested. The contacts are being monitored more closely than normal, according to the health department. The first case of the COVID-19 variant believed to be more contagious was detected in Michigan over the weekend. Officials with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Saturday, Jan. 16 that an adult female living in Washtenaw County contracted a new COVID-19 variant, known as B.1.1.7. HONOLULU – A couple were arrested at a Hawaii airport after traveling from the U.S. mainland despite knowing they were infected with COVID-19, authorities said. The couple took a COVID-19 test in Seattle after returning from abroad, police said, then received their positive results while flying between Seattle and San Francisco. “Officials notified the couple of positive test results and directed them to isolate.”But the two, who had a layover in San Francisco, decided to continue on to Hawaii over the weekend. “They knowingly boarded a flight aware of their positive COVID-19 test results, placing the passengers of the flight in danger of death,” Kauai police said. Effective Wednesday, all travelers to Kauai must spend 14 days in quarantine regardless of whether they obtain a negative COVID-19 test.

When it comes to COVID testing, we’ve been hearing about growing lines and delayed results. But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new emergency use authorization for an at-home test. The new test by California-based Lucira is a nasal swab test that can provide a result within 30 minutes and is for use by anyone ages 14 and older if their healthcare provider thinks they may have COVID-19. The nasal swab test involves swirling a patient’s self-collected sample swab in a vial, which is then placed in the test unit. The FDA did not talk about the price of the test but the company’s website indicated that the test is intended to cost less than $50.

Rapid test results are critical to quickly quarantining those who are infected and tracing their contacts. There are other rapid tests but most require a small, special machine operated by a health professional to deliver results. The Lucira COVID-19 test grew out of research the company was doing to develop an at-home flu test, according to the company’s website. Lucira said its test results matched those of a laboratory-based test 94% of the time when screening for the virus. Doctors will be required to report the home test results.

New guidelines from the CDC claim those who have been exposed, but dont have symptoms might not need to be tested. Testing after a potential exposure is still recommended regardless of symptoms for vulnerable individuals -- such as older adults and anyone with chronic medical conditions. The update does not reference quarantine or isolation after an exposure, but the CDC still recommends it.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – With testing for active coronavirus becoming more readily available, there’s a new push for antibody testing as well. Cities, organizations and employers can request the team to visit; Wednesday they were in Sterling Heights testing essential workers. “What this testing will do is give us a better sense of how many people have been infected by the virus,” said Sterling Heights mayor Michael Taylor. “Maybe there’s an ability to donate blood and plasma to help other people if we were exposed to it,” he said. Again, this testing is being done and paid for by the Wayne State Physicians Group, ACCESS and Ford.

After a lot of teamwork, they came up with the state’s first drive-thru rapid testing site. Inside is room for 200 first responders to stay if they test positive and don’t want to risk spreading the virus to their families. “The city of Dearborn has stepped up to provide not just for their city but for western Wayne County," Gilchrist said. Dearborn officials will continue to work on getting as many tests as they can to test as many first responders as they can.

Gretchen Whitmer’s office, COVID-19 testing will be conducted in the parking lot of the Henry Ford Centennial Library -- 16301 Michigan Ave. -- at no cost to eligible Michiganders. Testing will be conducted using the new Abbot ID NOW™ COVID-19 test, which recently received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the fastest detection of the virus. Patients are required to stay in their vehicles at the testing site. The testing process takes about 30 minutes from the collection of the swab to the delivery of results.
