Two spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates and China swung into orbit around Mars on successive days last week. AdPerseverance, the biggest, most advanced rover ever sent by NASA, became the ninth spacecraft since the 1970s to successfully land on Mars, every one of them from the U.S. “Are we alone in this sort of vast cosmic desert, just flying through space, or is life much more common? Two older NASA landers are still humming along on Mars: 2012′s Curiosity rover and 2018′s InSight.
Asteroid samples escaping from jammed NASA spacecraft
Read full article: Asteroid samples escaping from jammed NASA spacecraftCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A NASA spacecraft is stuffed with so much asteroid rubble from this week’s grab that it’s jammed open and precious particles are drifting away in space, scientists said Friday. Scientists announced the news three days after the spacecraft named Osiris-Rex briefly touched asteroid Bennu, NASA's first attempt at such a mission. A cloud of asteroid particles could be seen swirling around the spacecraft as it backed away from Bennu. The samples won't make it back until 2023, seven years after the spacecraft rocketed away from Cape Canaveral. Because of the sudden turn of events, scientists won't know how much the sample capsule holds until it's back on Earth.

The launch of NASAs successor to the Hubble Space Telescope faces seven more months of delay, this time because of the pandemic and technical issues. Officials announced Thursday that the James Webb Space Telescope the space agency's top science priority is now scheduled to launch on Oct. 31, 2021. NASA wants an overlap in operations between Hubble and Webb. The new telescope, once launched, will look at many of the same things Hubble has and will. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Department of Science Education.
