Van Buren police were unable to make much progress with the case and Michigan State Police took over. Defense attorneys argued while police can place a truck and cell phones tied to the men at Covingtonโs home, there is no evidence that the men shot and killed her.

Shandon Groom from Sumpter Township was also charged. During a preliminary exam, those closest to Covington testified that she didnโt know the three men. Edwards said he placed Shane Evans with the two others, Moore and Groom, in Sumpter Township. The evidence tech from Sumpter said he couldnโt say what happened to the phone once he bagged it for evidence.
