A high-profile spat between the United Auto Workers and Stellantis over reopening an Illinois factory complex has made its way into the race for U.S. president and could bring a strike against the automaker.

DETROIT The United Automobile Workers is preparing for an important negotiation. US Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Matthew Schneider, has agreed to talk with UAW President Rory Gamble about changes that can be made pertaining to corruption. In a joint statement released Monday Schneider said, "I look forward to working with president Gamble to achieve what I hope will be a joint effort to resolve some of the serious issues. DETROIT – Ruben Burks, the first African American International UAW Secretary-Treasurer, died Monday. Burks also helped the Flint community. In December 2017, Local 598 renamed its union hall Ruben Burks Hall to honor his decades of leadership. “Ruben Burks will always be here in spirit,” said UAW Region 1D Director Steve Dawes. He was full of wisdom and never stopped fighting for active and retired UAW members and all working people.”

DETROIT – The 2019 UAW national contract with FCA is almost complete, sources tell Local 4. Local 4 Business Editor Rod Meloni has the latest update on contract discussions between Fiat Chrysler and the United Automobile Workers. The signing bonus for UAW-FCA line workers is expected to be $9,000, the same as at Ford. Unlike the Ford and GM contracts, FCA has agreed not to close any assembly or component plants that haven’t already been announced. In the end, union officials view what they’ve been able to cobble together at FCA a “pattern-plus” contract.

DETROIT Members of the United Automobile Workers union approved the tentative contract with Ford on Friday. According to the union, 56.3 percent of members voted in favor of the agreement. Ford workers will get $9,000 each, but Ford will close a factory in the deal, a person briefed on the pact said earlier this month. Every Ford employee and temporary employee will be at the top-rate for full-time status at the end of this four-year agreement, said Acting UAW President Rory Gamble, who is Director of the UAW Ford Department. This is a life changing contract for many and provides a template for all future Ford UAW members to a full-time, top-rate status.

The UAW Board of Directors approved President Gary Jones leave of absence earlier this month. Now, Local 4 has learned, some board members are looking to make it a permanent leave for Jones and his indicted right-hand man, Vance Pearson, from the union. Looking at the UAW constitution, the board members intend to use whats referred to as Article 30. When their homes were raided, Jones and Pearson both sat on the UAW executive board. The rarely used mechanism requires five board members to agree to sign a charging document and send it to the UAW secretary treasurer.

DETROIT As the United Automobile Workers deal with an embezzlement scandal sending more officers to prison and negotiate national contracts, Rory Gamble has taken over as the new president. Local 4 Business Editor Rod Meloni got an exclusive first interview with Gamble to hear what he had to say about the problems facing the union and his plans to solve them. "During this meeting, GM CEO Mary Barra requested all committees work to resolve their open issues simultaneously so the company could receive a comprehensive proposal from the union. We agreed with that request and those open committees have been meeting since then and are yet to be concluded," reads the letter. Barra visited the negotiation room at the Renaissance Center and spoke face to face with UAW President Gary Jones and UAW-GM Vice President Terry Dittes for about an hour. The strike began on Sept. 15 and, by the next day, nearly 50,000 union members had stopped reporting to work. As the strike grinds on, the damage done to those who depend on GM is getting worse. A Dearborn trucking company is teetering on the edge and counting on a quick settlement. Phoenix Trucking has dozens of trailers and truck digs, but they're all collecting dust while the clock ticks on the debt the company owes for them. If the strike doesn't end soon, it will be the end of the business, co-owner Mohammad Thalji said. "Most of my drivers, they're trying to find a temporary job, like Uber," Tlaib said.

DETROIT - Some United Automobile Workers are planning to protest during the Labor Day parade in Detroit. The protests are a response to the recent FBI raid on UAW president Gary Jones' home in Canton Township. He said some members are too scared to speak out as the corruption scandal continues to grow.
