The team was originally not allowed to practice for three weeks, but that changed to a two-game suspension for the players. This absolutely feels like retaliation against a young student athlete who called them on the carpet and they didnโt like it,โ said Skeneโs father, Doug Skene. Doug Skene said this type of first-time infraction should merit a warning as opposed to mass suspensions. Not only was it not allowed, now itโs being recognized as punished,โ Doug Skene said.

The university originally decided Wednesday to cancel its spring sports season for the second straight year despite other schools in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference continuing on with their sports. According to the university, the reason for cancellation was that other schools were not planning to adhere to COVID safety protocols. Student athletes made a plea Thursday at the Board of Regents meeting to allow the sports teams to play. In addition, the athletic conference is working on a conference-wide policy that will help ensure the health and safety of all student-athletes.

When Skene and the rest of her softball teammates received an email Wednesday canceling the spring sports season again, she said it was heartbreaking. However, Skene started making calls of her own and shared her findings at Thursdayโs Board of Regents meeting. โThe biggest thing is that we are finally heard and actually being listened to this time, instead of just told to keep our mouth shut and do what weโre told to,โ Skene said.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn issued an apology Wednesday for creating segregated online student cafes, one for white people and another for people of color, that it says were intended to promote discussions about race and diversity. He added its important that white students hear and learn from the experiences of students of color in these discussions. It seemed that opportunity was missed intentionally, said Ayoub, a UM-Dearborn graduate. The use of cafe was the cause of much confusion as people online thought the university was building two separate, physical cafes to serve students, said Vice-Chancellor Ken Kettenbeil, adding the sessions were one-time events, but he anticipates the dialogue will continue. The terms used to describe these virtual events and the descriptions themselves were not clear and not reflective of the universitys commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, the universitys statement said.
