ANN ARBOR – A coalition of student athletes at the University of Michigan are calling for the 14 day shutdown of athletics to be lifted. Now, student athletes are speaking out and have launched a petition to MDHHS to resume practices and competitions. We trust the guidance and leadership of those in charge of the health and safety of Michigan student-athletes. Given the University’s knowledge of the situation surrounding the athletic department, should a total shutdown have been necessary, it should have come from the University of Michigan leaders. The student-athletes at the University of Michigan stand united in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and keeping every member of our community safe.

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced on Tuesday that it will suspend practices for football, volleyball and girls swimming and diving immediately after receiving requirements for the state’s pilot rapid testing program. “The MHSAA also is working to update dates of competition to better reflect the testing schedule. The MDHHS will conduct webinars on Dec. 28 and 29 to train school personnel who will be involved in the testing process. Team practices could resume as early as Dec. 30 once the first tests have been administered. If schools are delayed in the start of testing, they may begin practice once individuals have had one negative test.

High school football teams were just three wins away from becoming state champions, but the games are now in question as COVID-19 restrictions postpone the season. “I think this is much different than where we were at last March and April,” Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Mark Uyl said.

DETROIT The Big Ten announced Thursday that fall sports teams, including football, will only play against conference opponents this year if there is a season. Fall sports affected by this announcement include football, mens and womens soccer, womens volleyball, field hockey and mens and womens cross country. Big Ten officials said this decision was made based on the advice of medical experts amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Michigan was scheduled to play at Washington and host Ball State and Arkansas State in its three out-of-conference games this season. Michigan State was scheduled to visit BYU and host Toledo and Miami (Florida) in nonconference games.

DETROIT All nine members of a club volleyball team in Detroit secured athletic scholarships to college despite the roadblocks created by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It was a very turbulent year, but the whole traveling team secured athletic scholarships. Coach Twon Davis had an idea years ago to use volleyball as a way to get girls, and now boys, to college. What I found working with kids with Club Xtreme -- they needed more resources -- rides, support, equipment, Smith said. Club Xtreme Volleyball accepts players ages eight to 18.

DETROIT Will it be safe for children, high schoolers or anybody to play sports amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic? Experts have divided 25 popular sports into three categories: high, moderate and low risk. The National Federation of State High School Associations released their list, which is based on the amount of close, sustained contact, along with other factors. Oklahoma recently rejected a plan that would have required social distancing and allowed all high school sports to resume without restrictions. One idea being considered by many states would change the calendar to shift lower risk sports to fall and move higher risk ones to the spring.
