Experts believe it’s the wooden spine of the Contest, said Craig Rich, director of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association. The wreckage is along the shore in Muskegon County, near where the White Lake channel meets Lake Michigan. In 2018, major parts were seen for the first time since 1974, a result of changes in lake current, water levels and sand. “Things get covered and uncovered all the time.”There was speculation in 2018 that the shipwreck was another schooner, the LC Woodruff.

In a message to leaders in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, the queen lamented the destruction caused by the storm. “Prince Philip and I were deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life,'' caused by the storm, the queen's message said. Official death tolls put the number of dead at least 68 people, but hundreds more are missing.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it will investigate the crash, which occurred Monday in Whitehall, 55 miles (88 kilometers) northwest of Grand Rapids. The Taylorcraft BC-12 plane had departed from an airport in Fremont about 45 minutes before the crash. The water tower is in a populated area. Squiers says the potential for injuries on the ground was "very real" if the plane had avoided the tower and crashed nearby.
