It is Women’s History Month, so we spoke with an Oscar and Emmy nominated writer, director, and producer who is a groundbreaker in the film industry. Ava DuVernay is the first African American woman to receive the Sun Dance Film Festival’s Best Director award. She has built quite a reputation for herself even though she did not pick up a camera until she was 32 years old. ANN ARBOR – Shine & Rise will hold its first public-facing event on Friday, March 26 in honor of Women’s History Month. While its regular monthly events are members-only, the March 26 event titled “Challenge Your Team: Gender Equity, Inclusion & Belonging at Work” is free to the public. Her talk will focus on how employees can challenge their companies to better practice diversity, inclusion and equity. Sivels is a nuclear engineer and the first Black woman to earn a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan. The university was considered the top nuclear engineering program in the United States. “It was the best for nuclear at the time, so when I got admitted, I thought ‘Man, another door has opened!’” Sivels recalled.
