“There are places where people can race their cars and push the limits in a safe environment. It’s not out on the streets,” police chief Ryan Gagnon said. “Be responsible, be safe, have a great time this weekend, but also realize that tragic incidents can happen.”

The Dog Days of August continue, with heat and humidity sticking around into the first half of next week before relief finally arrives.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is bringing cars and a crowd to the avenue.

This is going to be a unique summer in and around the D this year. Many of the annual experiences we love have returned and there are various new experiences you can see for the first time. Another event has popped up in its place -- the “MAGA Classic Car Cruise.” It was scheduled at the original date of the Dream Cruise. “Well, it’s not that we’re trying to take over the Dream Cruise and we understand why the Dream Cruise was shut down because of sponsorships and large gatherings,” said Rocky Raczkowski. Raczkowski, with the Oakland County Republican Party, said its their way to show support for local businesses and their part affiliation. “Support the local businesses, support police, fire and our EMT’s and also to support the administration,” Raczkowski said.

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – This year’s Woodward Dream Cruise was cancelled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Another event has popped up in its place -- the “MAGA Classic Car Cruise.” It’s scheduled for the same day and time, Aug. 15 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. along Woodward Avenue. Aug. 6, 2020 -- Michigan coronavirus (COVID-19) cases up to 85,429; Death toll now at 6,247The “MAGA Classic Car Cruise” is a pro-Donald Trump event. The event is being held by the Oakland County Republican Party. “Right now people are so down, all we see on the news is 140,000 dead and we need this,” he said.

DETROIT – The coronavirus (COVID-19) delivered another blow to the Metro Detroit economy Monday as concerns about the virus canceled the Woodward Dream Cruise. There were reports that this year’s Dream Cruise would be scaled down. A note from Ferndale officials circulated last month and revealed Mustang Alley and other major events associated with the Dream Cruise would be canceled, but the event would go on. “While we are deeply saddened by the tough decision to cancel the 26th annual Woodward Dream Cruise, we know it is in the greater public’s best interest to keep everyone safe and healthy,” said Michael Lary, of the Dream Cruise. “We look forward to resuming the Dream Cruise in 2021 and making it a memorable and safe experience for all.”

Coronavirus news:The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 63,261 as of Sunday afternoon, including 5,911 deaths, state officials report. At it’s peak in April, the state reported 30,300 active cases of COVID-19.

Local 4 obtained an email from Michael Lary, director of special events for Ferndale, showing the summer events canceled due to COVID-19. The email includes the Woodward Dream Cruise. In Ferndale, that means the Ferndale cruise events along Nine Mile Road, Mustang Alley and the Rock 'N Live entertainment.
