WARSAW – A zoo in Poland says it's the first to have captured on video the birth of a rare Philippine mouse-deer, and everyone's hoping it’s a male so it can help the endangered species breed. The night birth on Nov. 10 at 2:24 a.m. at the Wroclaw Zoo was filmed by a camera in the stall. It has given experts some knowledge on the mouse-deer’s birth process and the first actions of a newborn, including that it begins to nurse quite quickly. “It is a conservation milestone for this species,” the head of the Wroclaw Zoo, Radosław Ratajszczak was quoted as saying in a statement Tuesday. Their population is shrinking as they lose habitat to palm oil plantations, the Wroclaw Zoo said.

DETROIT – The Detroit Zoo is welcoming a 2-year-old female giraffe named Zara to the herd. Zara’s arrival means the Detroit Zoo now has four giraffes. “We’re happy to welcome Zara to the herd,” said Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the Detroit Zoological Society. ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Detroit Zoo is set to reopen Monday, June 8 after being closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the zoo will have an exclusive opportunity to visit during a special four-day reopening period. Officials say they are planning for a reopening that will include social distancing, limited and timed entry and strict, constant cleaning protocols due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Detroit Zoo is debuting a new polar bear, Anana, to help the threatened species with its breeding efforts. Anana made her debut Thursday, on International Polar Bear Day. March marks the start of polar bear breeding season, which is already apparent for 15-year-old male Nuka and 7-year-old female Suka, who have been at the Detroit Zoo since 2011 and 2018, respectively. Anana is 19 years old and was previously at the Cincinnati Zoo to breed with another male polar bear. When that polar bear didn’t appear to be fertile, Anana was brought to the Detroit Zoo to breed with Nuka.

DETROIT – In honor of International Polar Bear Day, the Detroit Zoo is debuting their newest polar bear family member. The polar bear, 19-year-old Anana, came to the zoo from the Cincinnati Zoo in late January. Visitors can join the DZS in celebrating Nuka, Suka and newcomer Anana at the Detroit Zoo during International Polar Bear Day on Thursday, February 27. Animal care staff will share information about the personalities and behaviors of polar bears Nuka, Suka and Anana immediately following each feeding. Children will also have the opportunity to compare themselves to a life-size polar bear cut-out in the Nunavut Gallery.

DETROIT – A bald eagle who was injured after a train collision last fall is now thriving at the Detroit Zoo. In Oct. 2019, the bald eagle was discovered injured in a Wendy’s parking lot in Monroe, Michigan, after a citizen reported witnessing a train and bald eagle collide a week prior, according to the zoo. The bird, named Captain Marvel, joins two other rescued bald eagles at the zoo; Flash and Mr. America. “We’re happy that we’re able to offer her a home here at the Detroit Zoo,” said Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS). “Female bald eagles tend to display more assertive behaviors, so she could end up being in charge in the eagles’ habitat,” said Carter.

After two weeks of a sharp decline in her health, the zoo decided to enter Little Mac into hospice care several days before her death. Dr. Julie Barnes, the zoo's director of animal care and health, said in a press statement before Little Mac's death. Melinda Morgan-Stowell, a guest service manager at the zoo, told CNN Saturday that Little Mac was the last elephant the zoo will ever have. Current regulations require far more room than the zoo has, so the zoo's elephant program and exhibit will be permanently closed, she said.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – When Metro Detroiters pay taxes for things such as the Detroit Zoo and Detroit Institute of Arts, some local governments have been keeping a piece of the cash collected. When the Detroit Zoo millage passed four years ago, and when the DIA millage passed this past November, the assumption was all the money would go to those institutions. That's money the county collects to pay the tax to fund the Zoo. "Over the years this has amounted to approximately $600,000 that has been withheld from the Zoological Society," the ZSA said. Taylor takes the most money from the Zoo tax.
