There is now a new chapter in northern Macomb County. “We learned that Macomb County is a pretty sizeable county so therefore our work will probably be best served if we had two branches,” Pamela Alexander with Northern Macomb County NAACP said. So that includes Romeo, New Heaven, Shelby Township, Macomb Township, parts of Sterling Heights. “We certainly 100 percent support the need for people to certainly consider taking the vaccine,” Alexander said.

And both Dr. Green who is now 87 and Washington, 76, more than 50 years later believe that much of what King spoke about in that speech is still being fought for today.

At MacArthur K-8 University Academy, community service is the center of everything the students do. Students and teachers work together on community service projects all year round, but on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, those service projects are highlighted. Observed every year on the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national Day of Service to encourage everyone to volunteer.

She sued, saying the Civil Rights Act prevents employment discrimination based on sex. Seven years later, the Supreme Court agreed, in a 6-3 decision. John Borsch, the attorney who represented the funeral home before the Supreme Court last year, disagrees.
