Airbnb said Thursday it will require hosts to comply with enhanced cleaning procedures as part of its effort to reassure guests and local officials during the coronavirus pandemic. Hosts in China are exempt because have their own local cleaning program, the company said. Airbnb is no longer requiring hosts to leave their rentals vacant for at least 24 hours between guests, as it did in April. San Francisco-based Airbnb said nearly 1.5 million listings have signed on to the enhanced cleaning standards since they were introduced in June. The company has also been removing party houses from its platform after a shooting last year at an unauthorized Halloween party in California.

Toward the beginning of the pandemic, a study showed that the SARS-Cov-2 virus can survive on cardboard for as long as 24 hours and on stainless steel for about 72 hours. Figuring out how long a contagious virus can survive on human skin isn’t an easy challenge as not many people are willing to have live SARS-CoV-2 smeared on them just for science. That’s why Japanese researchers used an unusual alternative -- human skin collected at autopsy about 24 hours after death. What they found was significant -- the SARS-CoV-2 virus could survive on human skin for nine hours -- significantly longer than the roughly two hours that the flu virus could remain a threat. You, or someone in your family, uses this in your kitchen almost daily and it can get quite dirty. Kila Peeples wanted to find a way to make her microwave sparkle, without using all of the strong cleansers. So, she tried to clean it with a couple of items that are also in the kitchen. She tested whether white vinegar or baking soda could clean her microwave the best, and it was a close call. Watch the video above to see which kitchen staple knocked out the dirt.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released updated guidelines for selecting, wearing and cleaning face masks for the coronavirus pandemic. The update was released Aug. 27. The CDC continues to recommend that you wear masks in public settings “around people who don’t live in your household and when you can’t stay 6 feet away from others.” Masks help stop the spread of COVID-19 to others, the CDC maintains. My grill, a Broil King by Regal, has been on my patio since 2016 and was overdue for a brushing/cleaning/polishing. Not so much a Broil King and more of a Broil Duke, royal but not quite sitting on the throne. I had forgotten the Broil King when new burned with the heat of a thousand suns. Newly rechristened Broil Emperor is like that-- if those thousand suns got together and fused into a heat singularity.

The CDC issued a warning over the weekend about rodents exhibiting unusual or aggressive behavior as the hunt for food becomes more difficult. Jurisdictions have closed or limited service at restaurants and other commercial establishments to help limit the spread of COVID-19. Community-wide closures have led to a decrease in food available to rodents, especially in dense commercial areas. Some jurisdictions have reported an increase in rodent activity as rodents search for new sources of food. Environmental health and rodent control programs may see an increase in service requests related to rodents and reports of unusual or aggressive rodent behavior, the CDC said.
