The Michigan GOP canceled an election watch party that was scheduled for Tuesday night after receiving threats.

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan’s top three elected officials are asking for the disbarment of four attorneys who they say pushed a false narrative of widespread election fraud in legal proceedings before multiple judges and courts including the nation’s highest judicial body, the US Supreme Court. The lawsuit, King v. Whitmer, went before the US Supreme Court and is being deemed frivolous by the three. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office on Thursday filed motions for sanctions in federal court against the same four lawyers, Michigan attorneys Greg Rohl, Scott Hagerstrom and Stefanie Junttila, along with Texas attorney Sidney Powell. DETROIT – A new private Facebook group emerged a few days ago aimed at conservatives in Michigan. Among the first to join were State Rep. Matt Maddock and his wife Meshawn Maddock who is in line to become co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party. One post praised the siege on the US Capitol saying people will sleep well knowing members of Congress were scared for their lives. In another post Matt Maddock told the group he joined CloutHub, a social media site popular with conservative and far right groups. Meshawn Maddock in one post wrote about the page, “Lord thank you for this.”Last week she helped charter 19 buses to bring Trump supporters to Washington, DC.

DETROIT – On Tuesday, the Michigan Democratic Party announced it wants the three Republican representatives from Michigan who objected to the election results to resign. Republicans Lisa McClain, Tim Walberg and Jack Bergman all objected last Wednesday after rioters stormed the US Capitol. The call Tuesday for those resignations also comes as there is growing pressure in Washington and Lansing for lawmakers to be held accountable for furthering false election claims. “Walberg, McClain and Bergman’s actions have been nothing short of an attack on our democracy, a betrayal of those who they represent,” wrote MDP Party Chair Lavora Barnes. The next big thing we will be watching is how these members vote on impeachment Wednesday morning.

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan election workers and employees rolled a 10-sided die to choose 20 numbers that will go through a random number generating software to choose ballots to be inspected and audited. More than 18,000 ballots will be used for what the state calls a risk-limiting audit. The audit is routine but will be under heavy scrutiny this year after repeated false claims that the state’s election was fraudulent or riddled with issues. Those claims focused on Antrim County where human error initially changed several thousand votes for President Trump to President-elect Joe Biden. Of the two Georgia Senate runoff races that will determine which political party has more legislative power in the years to come, Democrats have been victorious in both -- giving the party the Senate majority. Though Georgia’s Senate results favor Democrats, Biden says that he will work with representatives on both sides of the aisle in an effort to unite the nation and take action to move the country forward as president. I have long said that the bipartisan COVID-19 relief bill passed in December was just a down payment. DETROIT – During a call with Georgia election officials President Donald Trump made a slew of claims about the results of the 2020 White House race. Some of the claims were directly about the results in Michigan and Detroit, and others focused on the election overall. This claim was also made by election worker Melissa Carone during her infamous hearing in the Michigan House. There is no legal way to overturn the election results in Detroit or the State of Michigan.

The group says that if the 10-day audit isn’t granted, they will object to the Electoral College votes that have declared Biden the president-elect. Michigan Republicans are joining the last-ditch effort to overturn the election results. More than 100 Republican House members from the so-called Kraken Caucus are also expected to object to the presidential election results next week. This week, Democratic Senator Gary Peters called objections to the election results deliberate attempts to undermine trust in American elections. Trump and his allies have filed roughly 50 lawsuits challenging election results, and nearly all have been dismissed or dropped.

DETROIT – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said she is ready to file sanctions against the attorneys who filed lawsuits on behalf of the Trump campaign. ANTRIM COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan officials conducted a “risk-limiting” audit of presidential election ballots cast in Antrim County, where a clerical error inspired baseless conspiracies of voter fraud. Antrim County uses software from Dominion Voting Systems, which has a target for conspiracy theories about election fraud this year. Even though the state’s election results have been certified for weeks, Michigan officials still chose to audit Antrim County’s votes on Dec. 17. As a result of the vote audit, Biden lost 1 vote and Trump gained 11 additional votes in Antrim County. “Today’s full audit in Antrim County confirmed the truth and affirmed the facts: Dominion’s voting machines accurately tabulated the votes cast for president in Antrim County,” Benson said on Dec. 17.

DETROIT – The Michigan House and Senate Oversight committees subpoenaed Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey and Livonia City Clerk Susan Nash. Both cities had a number of precincts where the poll books did not match the vote tally and are not explained. Both city clerks have until Jan. 12 to present documents explaining how the election was handled. The Michigan House and Senate are holding hearings on alleged voting irregularities, which have found no proof of fraud at this point and nothing to suggest the vote in Michigan was not secure or accurate. House Oversight Chair Matt Hall, of Marshall, issued the following statement Tuesday after a joint hearing of the House and Senate Oversight committees:

DETROIT – On Tuesday, the Michigan House and Senate Oversight Committees voted to issue subpoenas to Livonia City Clerk, Susan Nash, and Detroit City Clerk, Janice Winfrey, for information related to the 2020 general and primary elections. Under the subpoenas both Winfrey and Nash have until 5 p.m. Jan. 5, 2021 to provide information and documents on how they ran the elections. Tuesday’s vote was made only one day after Michigan electors unanimously cast 16 Electoral College votes for Joe Biden for president. House Oversight Chair, Matt Hall, of Marshall issued the following statement after the joint hearing of the House and Senate Oversight Committees. “The House and Senate Oversight Committees have heard testimony and claims about this election.

DETROIT – Michigan Rep. Paul Mitchell announced on Monday that he is disaffiliating from the Republican Party. Although he voted to re-elect President Donald Trump, Mitchell finds the president’s push of conspiracy theories about the election to be disqualifying behavior. LANSING, Mich. – Michigan electors gathered on Monday to fulfill their constitutional duty to elect the winner of the popular vote for the office of U.S. president and vice president. On Monday afternoon, Michigan electors unanimously cast 16 Electoral College votes for Joe Biden for president. They also unanimously cast 16 votes for Kamala Harris for vice president. The meeting was a formality, as Michigan electors are required by law to vote for the winner of the popular vote. Michigan has 16 electors to reflect the number of senators and representatives it has in the U.S. Congress.

HOUSTON – The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a lawsuit backed by President Donald Trump to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory, ending a desperate attempt to get legal issues rejected by state and federal judges before the nation’s highest court. The court’s order was its second this week rebuffing Republican requests that it get involved in the 2020 election outcome. Trump had called the lawsuit filed by Texas against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin “the big one” that would end with the Supreme Court undoing Biden’s substantial Electoral College majority and allowing Trump to serve another four years in the White House. But they would not have done as Texas wanted pending resolution of the lawsuit, and set aside those four states’ 62 electoral votes for Biden. The four states sued by Texas had urged the court to reject the case as meritless.

Despite that, four Michigan GOP congressmen have signed onto the case and 15 GOP state lawmakers. Nessel and the Attorney Generals of the other states have all filed briefs with the high court. Each member who signed their names on their respective briefs also won their own elections in 2020, which they are now asking to be invalidated.

Michigan’s election results faced another round of legal challenges in courts both big and small just four days before the Electoral College is slated to meet and finalize the 2020 election. In the U.S. Supreme Court, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel responded to the state of Texas, which is suing Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia -- three other key states that voted in favor of President-elect Joe Biden. Texas alleged that Michigan broke its own election laws to send absentee ballots to voters during a pandemic, and argued that the court should throw out millions of votes. The scheme has been floated and then called for by President Trump, his campaign and his legal team before and after the presidential election in an effort to overturn election results.

Attorneys general in several states including Michigan have to respond to a lawsuit in U.S. Supreme Court filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Rep. Cynthia Johnson is under investigation after she posted on social media a response to the many violent, vulgar and racist death threats she’s received. The video, posted Tuesday night, has quickly gone viral and legislative leadership removed her from her House Oversight Committee assignments Wednesday. “My soldiers, they are soldiers for Christ, soldiers against racism, soldiers against domestic violence, soldiers against domestic terrorism,” Johnson said. Rep. Johnson has been removed from her committee assignments, and we are looking into further disciplinary action as the proper authorities conduct their own investigations. They’re even more unbecoming of an elected official," they said in a joint statement stating that violence and intimidation is never appropriate in politics. "That applies to threats made toward public officials, and it must also apply when the threats come from public officials. Behavior like this will not be tolerated this term or next.”Johnson could not be reached for comment. Earlier in the video, she urged people to “be smart” and “hit them in the pocketbook" — an apparent reference to Trump supporters. She urged people to call 911 or the police if they have been threatened or fear for their safety.

The court said it is “not persuaded that it can or should grant the requested relief.” The order was 4-3, with a Republican-nominated justice, Elizabeth Clement, joining three Democrats in throwing out the lawsuit. The case was filed days after the Board of State Canvassers certified Joe Biden's 154,000-vote Michigan victory over President Donald Trump. It was another lawsuit aimed at changing the outcome of the election. Election disputes pose a unique test of a representative democracy’s ability to reflect the will of the people when it matters most,” Justice David Viviano said. Chief Justice Bridget McCormack and justices Megan Cavanagh and Richard Bernstein joined Clement in dismissing the case but didn't offer separate remarks.

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Court of Appeals turned down an appeal Friday from President Donald Trump’s campaign in a challenge to how absentee ballots were handled in Detroit and other issues. Trump asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to disqualify more than 221,000 ballots in the state’s two biggest Democratic counties, alleging irregularities in the way absentee ballots were administered. Trump's lawsuit challenged procedures that have been in place for years and never been found to be illegal. The Wisconsin Supreme Court in March ruled that it was up to individual voters to determine their status. One other lawsuit filed by conservatives is still pending with the court seeking to invalidate ballots. The Michigan Secretary of State’s office said in a statement Thursday that there is no legal mechanism for two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers to rescind their votes cast for certification.

MADISON, Wis. – President Donald Trump will have to pay $7.9 million if he wants a statewide recount of unofficial results in Wisconsin showing him losing to Democrat Joe Biden by about 20,500 votes. That is four times higher than what the recount cost four years ago, a cost increase that elections officials said was driven by expenses related to conducting a recount during the coronavirus pandemic. The Wisconsin Elections Commission on Monday released the recount timeline and cost estimate, which was based on costs submitted by the 72 counties. Trump’s Wisconsin campaign spokeswoman Anna Kelly did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the estimated cost. Milwaukee County had the highest estimated cost at just over $2 million.
