Johnsonโs lawyers, Donald Salzman and Ronald Tabak, called on federal authorities to strike their clientโs current execution date of Jan. 14. It has executed more people in a single year than any other administration in more than 130 years. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday that inmates held on federal death row โ known as the Special Confinement Unit โ have tested positive for COVID-19. As of Thursday, there were more than 300 inmates with confirmed cases of COVID-19 at FCC Terre Haute.

Michael David McKerchie has been in jail since Sept. 21. Heโs also accused of reckless driving causing serious impairment, failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious impairment, resisting arrest and assaulting police. Upon noticing the inmate was unresponsive, deputies entered the cell and discovered a blanket attached to the manโs feet and tied around his neck as a ligature, police said. Officials say the deputies conducted CPR and used an automated external defibrillator on the inmate and were able to obtain a pulse. The inmate was then transported to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland hospital where he was placed on life support and listed in critical condition, officials said. The case is being investigated by the Oakland County Sheriffโs Office Special Investigations Unit.
