Whitmer (2020) class action settlement. The Hill settlement called for prosecutors to reconsider each of those sentences and commit to a timeline for resentencing eligible individuals. Of the 27 Oakland County based juvenile lifer cases eligible for review under the Hill settlement, McDonald withdrew motions filed by former Oakland County prosecutor Jessica Cooper for the reimposition of life without parole in 20 cases. The Oakland County Prosecutorโs Office is seeking more information in five additional Hill cases. โAs prosecutor, my primary obligation is to keep Oakland County communities safe and to follow the law.

Funding from Ballmer Group to Youth Advocate Programs Inc., is helping with startup costs. โThere is more consensus than ever that youth incarceration is part of a failed system โ that itโs dangerous, results in poor outcomes and is very expensive,โ said Jeff Fleischer, Youth Advocate Programs chief executive. Program grants for one year were provided to probation departments, juvenile courts and juvenile justice programs in California, Georgia, Ohio, Arizona, North Carolina and Illinois. Youth Advocate Programs is hiring and training neighborhood-based advocates to work with youth, parents and guardians.

A suburban Detroit judge who sent a 15-year-old girl to a juvenile detention facility for not doing her homework released the teen from probation on Tuesday, after an appeals court ordered her release. The girl was placed on probation in April in a case involving allegations of assault and theft, and had been in Oakland Countys Childrens Village since May for violating that probation, according to ProPublica. Brennan said a Michigan Court of Appeals decision July 31 ordering Graces release from Childrens Village effectively tied the lower courts hands. Among the requirements of her probation, Grace was expected to complete her schoolwork. Brennan initially cited a failure to submit to any schoolwork and getting up for school for her decision to place the teen in juvenile detention.
