DETROIT – In addition to the nearly 16,000 COVID-related deaths in Michigan over the last year, we know the pandemic has been devastating to businesses. AdThere have been a few bright spots with some businesses seeing an uptick in businesses due to the pandemic. Dimitri Polychronou owns Earl’s Dry Cleaning. People have been great to work with during this pandemic,” Millen said. AdThe majority of locally-owned businesses have really struggled, but there is hope of things improving as vaccine distribution expands.

This Sunday 3/14 is Pi Day, a celebration of the mathematical constant that measures a circle’s circumference to it’s diameter, which is around 3.14. Jannie Teitelbaum from Great Lakes Pot Pies in Clawson joined Jason Carr to show off some of the kinds of savory pies you can pick up from them this weekend. Sometimes there is a story that has you feeling good, inside and out. Natural Red Family Care products and the story of how the company started is sure to do just that. Founder Karen Guilmette spoke to Kila Peeples about how she began Natural Red after she wanted access to all-natural lotions, deodorant, and other daily care products for her five children, all while she was in the middle of a divorce and having to adjust to her new life as a single mother. Now years later, Natural Red is sold in numerous stores all over Detroit and the Midwest, and she continues to support her kids and the desire for natural-based hygiene products. March is National Noodle Month, so why not celebrate with a local homegrown pasta business? Mama Mucci’s started in one family’s basement, but is now available in more than 200 stores and restaurants across Southeast Michigan. Mama Mucci’s president Vince Mucci said the business started more than 35 years ago with an idea that came out of the basement of his childhood home. He said he grew up eating his mother’s fresh homemade pasta which she cooked for special occasions like their weekly Sunday dinners. Now it’s not just a family recipe, it’s a family business.

The lock down has put many local businesses in a tough spot, but Hot Sam’s Detroit is showing just how resilient the Detroit spirit can be by turning 100 years old this March. Lauren Stovall from Hot Sam’s Detroit stopped by the show to share how the city plans to recognize the store’s historic anniversary, and to show off some of the styles that have kept them in business. The store’s official birthday is on March 18th, which the Detroit City Council will dedicate as “Hot Sam’s Day.”The local holiday will be about acknowledging not just Hot Sam’s, but also other small businesses that have overcome and survived in the city of Detroit. Hosts Jason Carr and Tati Amare got the chance to chat with Don Button, the founder of Hell Fire Detroit, a Royal Oak based hot sauce company, that has a hot sauce for every taste. Button said Hot Ones first reached out through Heatonist, a specialty store in Brooklyn, New York that carries 100 small-batch hot sauces from around the country. They were already carrying Hell Fire Detroit sauces, but suddenly reached out for an extra 12,000 bottles. “We asked why, and they told us they were considering us for Hot Ones,” Button said. Hell Fire Detroit sells their sauces direct from their website, or you can find them at local stores across Michigan.

March is reading month, and we’re checking in with a local bookstore with one of the largest collections of rare and used books anywhere. Debra lee from the John King Books stopped by to chat about what you can expect at the store. They’ve grown so much they’ve expanded to the building next door to house some of their rare books. DETROIT – Haith and Henry Johnson started Le’Host Hair in their basement and after years of hard work, they now have their products on the shelves of major stores. Le’Host products caught the eye of Walmart executives and the products now are on the shelves of the world’s largest retail store. She took the products she had been developing and selling at her brick-and-mortar store to Walmart, where she won a pitch contest to get her natural-hair and wig friendly products into stores. AdLe’Host products are currently in about 200 Walmart stores, but they’ve been flying off the shelves. If you are looking to buy something fun and different for a friend or loved one, there is a tiny pink house in St. Clair Shores that is full of big surprises. Kitty Deluxe is a shop that has various handmade items such as jewelry and face mask holders that are mostly made by the store’s owner, Cat Massoff, and her family. The store also sells handmade goods from local business owners, such as lotions, face masks, and candles. Kitty Deluxe also sells cool pop culture items such as puzzles, magnets, and mugs that feature musicians like Prince and Dolly Parton. The first book they recommended to anyone looking to celebrate MLK Day was Strength To Love, a collection of his writings. They also got the chance to talk about the store’s virtual storytelling program, where young readers can tune in online to have stories read to them. Now Tara sells her jams at Eastern Market, which she said is a dream come true because of the history and diverse vendors. One local teen has a summer job unlike most: He’s running his own company! Kila Peeples caught up with Finn Gomez of Detroit Salsa Company to see how his booming business keeps him busy. The day after Black Friday is commonly known as Small Business Saturday, when consumers are encouraged to patronize and support small, local businesses. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. said if Michiganders switched one in every ten purchases from big-box stores to local businesses, it would pump more than a billion dollars into the economy and create more than 10,000 jobs. With the coronavirus pandemic hitting locally-owned businesses extra hard, it’s safe to say that it’s important to support small businesses on more than one day this year to help them stay afloat. LANSING, Mich. – State leaders are asking Michigan residents to beat lines and avoid crowds by shopping at local small businesses on Black Friday. One in five jobs in Michigan are in the retail industry, according to the Michigan Retailers Association. Gretchen Whitmer has been encouraging residents to support local and small businesses that have been hit hardest by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. “Now more than ever, small businesses in Pure Michigan need your support. It's about making small choices to support the local businesses that support your community, Lorenz said about the “Support Local" campaign.

One of the most popular fashions in women’s clothing are leggings, and these days they go way beyond basic black. Sunday is International Legging Day and one local business is celebrating in the best way! Linda Schlesinger started a homegrown business in casual wear, including leggings, and it has really taken off. She spoke to Tati Amare about her company, Skinny Tees in Birmingham, and the skyrocketing popularity of leggings. ANN ARBOR – The City of Ann Arbor is expanding its electric bike discount program, which it originally launched in July. Part of the Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations, the partnership program with Human Electric Hybrids in Kerrytown has expanded to include Arbor Vacuum. As part of the city’s sustainability goals, Arbor Vacuum is offering $100 off all e-bikes. Customers can also enjoy discounts on two e-bike models at Human Electric Hybrids. To secure the discount, customers only need to mention the discount program at check out.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Fans of Pizza Bobs in Ann Arbor have until Aug. 31 to visit the historic eatery at its current location. The new location, formerly RedLight Cafe, will allow Pizza Bobs to double its seating. Pizza Bob's has served Ann Arbor for over 50 years. To celebrate the move, Pizza Bobs will give away Pizza Bob facemasks and have $8 meal deals, including a Chipati and milkshake combination. Pizza Bobs will be located at 800.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Small business owners already feel a lot of responsibility but Molly Ging, owner of The Little Seedling in Ann Arbor, said that the COVID-19 pandemic has been an immense burden. She closed the doors to The Little Seedling on Stadium Boulevard early on in the COVID-19 pandemic -- a cue she took from Ann Arbor bookstore, Literati. She brought in a large supply of kids masks and began posting videos on The Little Seedling Facebook page to show parents how the masks fit. Luckily, The Little Seedling has been able to bring back many employees to help with curbside services. Updated hours can be found on a calendar on The Little Seedling website.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Bringing Los Angeles-inspired flavors to Ann Arbor, LA natives Steven Choi and Brian Kim opened up the Bao Boys food truck in the yard of York on July 1. Choi and Kim dont have backgrounds in the food industry but they both love food, Bao Boys co-owner Steven Choi said. The current bao menu at Bao Boys was an amalgamation of different flavors inspired by different cuisines the friends experienced in LA. Choi said that eaters should check for updated hours and times on the Bao Boys Instagram account where the food truck will make announcements. The food truck naturally acts as a barrier to separate the food-truck owners from their customers and that customers cant come in the food truck.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Om of Medicine in downtown Ann Arbor is celebrating its 10-year anniversary throughout July with a concert, a comedy show, yoga and other programming. Om of Medicine Director of Community Outreach Lisa Conine said that the celebration was a way to mix the centers community engagement and celebrate its impacts within Ann Arbor. Om of Medicine is also a supporter of many Ann Arbor nonprofit organizations and projects including Food Gatherers, the Main Street Area Association, Prison Creative Arts Project, Cancer Support Community of Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Medical Cannabis Guild, Ann Arbor Wellness Coalition and the Ann Arbor Film Festival. Then, The Wood Garage quickly started selling items across the United States and internationally, but at an exhausting pace. While that may not seem like a lot, Stom said, The Wood Garage crafts items from start to finish. Since it is predominately online, The Wood Garage has actually experienced the opposite. Aside from its growth over the past few months, Stom said The Wood Garage was lucky. Currently, pieces and custom items from The Wood Garage are either made in Stoms garage in Ann Arbor or out of her brothers shop in Belleville.

ANN ARBOR Approaching its 25th birthday, Nicolas Books is known as a townie go-to spot for books and book-related events on the west side of Ann Arbor. First named Little Professor, the independent bookstore in the Westgate Shopping Complex was rebranded to Nicolas Books after it was purchased by Nicola Rooney in 1995. In March, Nicolas Books had to shut its doors to the public. Nicolas Books also began selling puzzles, gift boxes and hosting virtual events, like webinars with authors, workshops, storytimes and book previews. She said that Nicolas Books will celebrate its 25th birthday in some fashion but doesnt yet know what that will look like.

But the closure didnt stop Behan and Ziola from using Juicy Kitchen to make wholesale meals for community partners, paying their staff and making meals for frontline workers. Started in 2011, Juicy Kitchen originated as a healthy meal delivery business by Susan and George Todoroff. Juicy Kitchen would drop off premade food at community partners, White Lotus Farms and Argus Farm Stop, who would then sell the food to hungry customers. Ziola credited the two markets as being a reason why Juicy Kitchen survived while closed to the public. Juicy Kitchen is at 1506 N Maple Rd.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Owned by former professional tennis player Dominika Wozniak, Ann Arbor training studio FitPoint has taken fitness training online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through working with individuals and small classes, Wozniak said that the gym is able to adjust training and conditioning to individual client needs. With the closure of gyms and training spaces on March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FitPoint moved online to make sure its clients kept moving. They are offered at various times during the day for FitPoint clients and those interested in dropping-in. However, the training studio offers its virtual classes every day of the week at various times during the day.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. In 2012, Ilze Meija-Ham opened zoey + joey when she couldnt find a salon for her children, now shes trying to anticipate how and when she will be able to reopen. Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, Meija-Ham said zoey + joey clients were willing to drive from up to an hour away to have their children work with her stylists. Owner Ilze Meija-Ham said that clients drive from up an hour away in order to visit the Ann Arbor salon. (Ilze Meija-Ham)If she can reopen zoey + joey, Meija-Ham said that things will be touch-and-go. She anticipates barely being able to make ends meet after paying her overhead costs and her stylists. Nevertheless, she is trying to plan for the changes that will have to be made to zoey + joey.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Established in 1933, Wheels in Motion has served Ann Arbor cyclists for 87 years. Now located on Washtenaw Ave, the bicycle business and repair shop has been busy working to help essential workers and Ann Arbor cyclists during the COVID-19 pandemic. His suppliers are actually out of new bicycles, so hes moved all of his inventory to the Ann Arbor location of Wheels in Motion. The Wheels in Motion has been repairing bikes from around Ann Arbor since the end of April. Over the course of its long history in Ann Arbor, the bike shop has been involved in community events and organizations.
