The Macomb County Health Department announced that it will extend its clinic hours at the Verkuilen Building in Clinton Township as well increase capacity. Additionally, the department will increase the number of doses given per hour by 25% -- going from 12,000 doses distributed each week to 17,500 doses. “With these increases and expansions, we will be able to serve a greater number of individuals in our county,” said Andrew Cox, director, Macomb County Health Department. Those who live or work in Macomb County will be able to choose a location to receive a vaccine through an online scheduler. “As eligibility opens up, Macomb County will continue to find innovative solutions for serving our population,” said County Executive Mark Hackel.

DETROIT – On Monday, frustration grew as seniors trying to get vaccinated found out the wait may take longer than expected. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel is blaming the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and saying that the focus has shifted away from seniors. Eligible essential workers, teachers and childcare workers will be notified by their employers about vaccine clinic dates and locations, Gov. Michigan Medicine announced it will pause phase 1B vaccinations due to a lower-than-expected supply. U of M will make sure there are enough vaccines for people from the first phase to get their second dose. “There still is not a national strategy.”Because supply of the vaccine is limited, residents are required to get an appointment.

Metro Detroit’s tri-counties -- Wayne, Oakland and Macomb -- are running out of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Wayne County Health Department, which does not include Detroit, is getting 975 doses of the vaccine from Michigan every seven to 10 days. Oakland County has received 1,950 a week and is also requesting 5,000 a week. Macomb County is receiving 1,000 a week and requesting 50,000. Both Oakland and Wayne counties said they could give 1,000 shots a day if they had them.

Wayne County is holding a meeting Monday morning to discuss what’s next and Macomb County is expected to receive about 2,000 doses. In November, Macomb County received its first freezer capable of keeping the vaccine stable until ready to thaw. Macomb County will also be storing and distributing for counties north of it -- Lapeer, St. Clair and Sanilac counties. Despite having some of the highest total confirmed cases of coronavirus in Michigan, Macomb County has one of the lowest growth rates in the state. MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Monday in Michigan marked the first day that Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s new face mask requirement went into effect -- making it a misdemeanor to refuse wearing one in enclosed public spaces. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham is on board with the requirement, urging people to wear face masks and businesses to require them. Whitmer, the department just doesn’t have the resources to respond to every complaint about people not complying with the mask requirement. Hackel believes the new mask requirement is a knee-jerk reaction to recent events, and that it is not democratic. As of Monday, Michigan is reporting 69,722 COVID-19 cases and 6,075 deaths -- and increase of 384 new cases and seven deaths since Sunday.

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. - New Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter met with his Macomb County counterpart Thursday, sparking hope that a deal for a regional mass transit system could be back on the table. When L. Brooks Patterson was in office, any talks of regional transit were stopped dead in their tracks. But Coulter's meeting with Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel has residents wondering if a connection between the counties is back in play. But with Coulter in favor of new mass transit options, it created an opportunity to see if that is something the two could explore. For years, voters in Macomb and Oakland counties have declined to pay for a mass transit system.

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. - For years Macomb County has wrestled with the problem of an aging county jail and now there's talk of a major millage campaign to build the most expensive jail the state has ever seen. Sheriff Tony Wickersham and county executive Mark Hackel, the former sheriff, invited Local 4 in to a sweltering intake cell usually used for inmates detoxing or sobering up. The cell has been used since 1951. Officials are proposing a millage that would likely cost the average homeowner around $98 per year for twenty years.
