ANN ARBOR – Jefferson Street from Ashley Street to First Street closed Monday morning to through traffic for road construction that is expected to last until 5 p.m. on April 9. According to the city, cars traveling westbound on Jefferson Street will be detoured north on Ashley Street, east on William Street, and south on First Street. Cars traveling eastbound will be detoured south on First Street, east on Madison Street, and north on Ashley. Property owners on Jefferson located in the work zone will be able to access the road throughout the project. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained by the contractor during the project, but some detours may be implemented depending on project developments.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A Good Samaritan risked his life to save a stranger’s. RJ was critically injured in a crash when he stopped Tuesday to help two women on the side of Northwestern Highway. “He’s been telling everyone he was just trying to help,” Kendrick recalled. He was helping when another driver tried to squeeze by on the shoulder, striking RJ and one of the women. “There is a possibility if he wasn’t there, she would not have made it.”RJ was critically injured and remains in the ICU following surgery.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Two people have been rushed to a hospital after being hit by a car on Northwestern Highway near Beck Road in Southfield. DEARBORN, Mich. – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Dearborn on Saturday. Dearborn police were called to Greenfield Road, south of Ford Road at 8:15 p.m.Police said a 67-year-old woman was crossing Greenfield Road when she was struck by a southbound traveling vehicle driven by a 20-year-old man. DETROIT – A 52-year-old pedestrian was killed Sunday when a collision caused one of the vehicles to strike him. Police said he was standing on the corner of Gratiot Avenue and Conner Street when two vehicles collided in the intersection at about 8:40 p.m. It is unknown which of the two vehicles struck the pedestrian on the corner. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Officials are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in Macomb County. Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to Hall Road and Gratiot Avenue on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. for the report of a crash. Police said Reed Styers, 61, of Harrison Township was killed in the crash. ANN ARBOR – A University of Michigan effort focused on the safety of automated and connected vehicles will be bringing more than 20 “smart intersections” to the city of Ann Arbor. These intersections will be capable of collecting and sending information to connected cars in real time. This information will be transmitted to nearby connected vehicles, prompting onboard alarms when cars are in hazardous situations. At its peak, it became the largest connected vehicle deployment in the world, with nearly 3,000 vehicles on the road. Through these projects, researchers were able to provide evidence that connected vehicles can reduce unimpaired collisions by 90%.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The City of Ann Arbor wants to know how you would improve getting around Lower Town. Community members are being asked to share their thoughts and pre-pandemic experiences as drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and transit users in the Lower Town area, located just north of Broadway Bridge. Currently in the idea generation phase of a mobility study, the city is asking residents to fill out and share a survey to help see how growth has impacted community members who drive, ride, cycle and walk through the area. A man was critically injured when in a collision in Clinton Township, Dec. 19, 2020. CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 52-year-old man is in critical condition after he was struck by a pickup truck as he was crossing the street near the intersection of Cottrell and Harper avenues, just east of I-94, Saturday. According to authorities, the collision happened just before 5:30 p.m. when the pickup truck turned from northbound Harper Avenue onto eastbound Cottrell Avenue, where the man was walking in the crosswalk. Police said the man struck his head and suffered a head injury. Police said the driver, a 53-year-old man from Clinton Township, immediately stopped and rendered aid.

PONTIAC, Mich. – A man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the hit-and-run of a pedestrian crossing North Perry Street in Pontiac. Police had been searching for the driver who they said hit a 29-year-old woman Monday night as she crossed North Perry Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. An older model SUV struck her and kept going. Police said the man, who is in his 30s, was spotted trying to conceal the vehicle in a trailer. The woman was in critical condition as of Monday night.

ANN ARBOR – Having just completed the Allen Creek Railroad Berm Project, the city of Ann Arbor is now setting its sights on the creation of a new pedestrian tunnel beneath the railroad near Bandemer Park. City officials and Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission staff will hold a public online meeting Wednesday, Dec. 2 to share project goals, refined design based on feedback from residents and the feasibility study recommendations. They will also open up the meeting for public comment after their presentation. City and county officials will also share a proposal to extend the Border-to-Border Trail through Barton Nature Area. CANTON, Mich. – Police are investigating a pedestrian crash that happened Sunday morning around 7:15 a.m. in the area of Michigan Avenue and Schooner Road. It took place after a man was crossing the eastbound lanes of Michigan Avenue at Schooner Road from the south side to the north side. That is when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle which stopped and remained at the scene. The man was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ypsilanti where he died of his injuries. Canton police say speed, alcohol and distracted driving do not appear to be factors in the crash.

ANN ARBOR – If you’re driving in the downtown area, you’ll want to avoid the intersection of Liberty and First streets for the next couple of days. Liberty Street will be near the intersection of First Street starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday for road paving. Cars traveling on Liberty westbound will be detoured south onto Main Street, west onto William Street and north onto Second Street and then back onto Liberty. Cars traveling eastbound will be detoured south onto Second Street, east onto William Street, north onto Ashley Street and then back onto Liberty. Traffic between First and Main streets, Second and First streets and pedestrian traffic on one side of the street will be maintained.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police are seeking more information in a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened around 10:20 p.m. Thursday near the 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads intersection. According to police, the 21-year-old female victim was fatally struck in the area by an unknown vehicle. RAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle Tuesday morning at 27 Mile and Romeo Plank roads in Ray Township. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle did not stop after hitting the pedestrian. Deputies first responded to the area about 7:17 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said. The unidentified man, who police believe to be about 50 years old, was found laying in the lawn of a residence near the intersection. DETROIT – A man was hit and killed while trying to cross the Southfield Freeway on Monday night in Detroit. He hopped over the median on the freeway near Grand River Avenue and tried to walk across. He was struck by two vehicles just before 7 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway. While other drivers decided to film the incident on their phones, Angela Potter tried to save him. He was trying to cross the freeway from the east side of the Southfield Freeway (M-39).
