Mellon Foundationโs Just Futures Initiative has awarded the University of Michigan two $5 million grants. Led by professors Stephanie Fryberg and Earl Lewis, the grant money will be used over the next three years to fund projects that address racial inequity. Fryberg is a professor of psychology and a University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor. Lewis is the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies and Public Policy. In total, the Mellon Foundation awarded more then $72 million in grant funding for 16 arts, humanities and social sciences projects across the U.S.

The project, which begins immediately, aims to uncover possible racial inequities by analyzing data surrounding decision-making by the prosecutorโs office. โWe know systemic racism exists in all facets of society, and the Prosecutorโs Office is no exception. Finally, in consultation with researchers, the Prosecutorโs Office will identify metrics to track to ensure equitable treatment. He has spent years compiling and analyzing data from Michiganโs criminal justice system, was the data consultant for the CREW report and has served as Data Administrator for Michiganโs Criminal Justice Policy Commission.

Work on the project stopped for seven weeks due to a statewide stay-at-home order aimed at slowing the spread of the virus. But crews are now in the middle of Phase Two of the project, which involves fixing the street structure and repairing masonry, the Detroit Free Press reported. Ford Motor Co. bought the iconic building just outside downtown in 2018 for research and development of self-driving vehicles.
