DETROIT – A local radio DJ is spending several nights outside in a tent, braving the freezing temperatures for a good cause. Steve Grunwald from WYCD’s morning show has been sleeping outside the Ronald McDonald House since Tuesday night. He’s doing it to raise $50,000 for the Ronald McDonald House, which offers families a place to stay while their children are undergoing treatment at Children’s hospital. Grunwald has promised to stay put, living in that tent, until every dime of the $50,000 is raised. But here’s the kicker: You can donate to help Grunwald reach his goal, or you can donate to keep him there longer.

After a video of Michigan Senator Majority Leader Mike Shirkey with the Hillsdale County Republican Party was posted on YouTube, the senator stands by his comments, but perhaps not his exact choice of words. The hour-long video was posted on Feb. 4. On Tuesday, Shirkey addressed the comments on “AM Jackson with Greg O’Connor” on WKHM. “President Trump could and should have acted sooner and more forcibly even to call off the attack, but he did not cause the attack. “I’ve had first-hand experience over this past week with regular spanking by the media,” Shirkey said.

DETROIT – Detroit sports broadcasting legend Frank Beckmann has announced his plans to retire after 48 years with WJR. Beckmann has hosted “The Frank Beckmann Show” on weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon for the last 18 years. Throughout his career, Beckmann is the only person to broadcast games for all four of Detroit’s major sports teams -- the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions. “As a youngster growing up on the east side of Detroit, I always imagined sitting behind a microphone, announcing Lions and Tigers games,” Beckmann said. Beckmann was indicted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

DETROIT Longtime Detroit sports writer and radio host Jamie Samuelsen revealed on Monday that hes been fighting colon cancer. Samuelsen announced the news on his radio show, the Jamie & Stoney Show, on 97.1 The Ticket. Each morning since my diagnosis, I got up, turned on the radio mic and got to talk sports, Samuelsen said. So I wanted to continue to have fun and not let cancer get in the way of doing what I loved. Samuelsen has been a Detroit sports media staple since 1994, when he first joined WDFN.

DETROIT Detroit is one of more than a dozen radio markets to launch the Black Information Network, a 24/7 news station devoted to the Black community. For years WDFNs 11:30 a.m. slot was known as The Fan -- now, the sports talk channel will have a completely different sound. Darci McConnell, with McConnell Communications, says the launch is amazing news that many Detroiters have been waiting a long time to hear. There is a pronounced look at issues of race and disparities as it relates to race and fights for civil rights, McConnell said. Metro Detroiters can tune into the Black Information Network at 11:30 a.m. on WDFN or on the iHeart Radio app.

Usually, the weather radio is the most reliable method, since cell networks have problems more frequently than the weather radio transmission source. In fact, I can only remember one other occasion during my long career here at Local 4 where the weather radio network was down during a storm event -- its highly reliable. NORFOLK, Va.The U.S. government will try to stop a company's planned salvage mission to retrieve the Titanics wireless telegraph machine, arguing the expedition would break federal law and a pact with Britain to leave the iconic shipwreck undisturbed. U.S. attorneys filed a legal challenge before a federal judge in Norfolk, Virginia, late Monday. The Atlanta-based salvage firm RMS Titanic Inc., plans to recover the radio equipment from a deck house near the ship's grand staircase. The salvage firm disagrees, arguing that hundreds of years of maritime law firmly puts the wreck into the hands of admiralty court in Norfolk. NOAA seeks to jettison the law of the sea, developed over centuries, the firm argued in legal documents filed earlier this year.
