DEARBORN, Mich. – Kate Black was only 25 years old when she died in a car crash last week. She was working at her dream job, teaching kindergartners at Lindbergh Elementary School in Dearborn. She came from a family of educators who can think of no better way to memorialize their beloved daughter than to establish a scholarship fund in her name. Family friend Amanda Obrycki Brithinee started a GoFundMe account for the scholarship, and after Black’s parents made a sizable donation, the fund started to take off. “You don’t expect to see all of the dollar amounts, you don’t expect see so many shares and so many donors and just people being selfless,” Orbycki Brithinee said.

DETROIT – When the pandemic first hit in March and students in the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) students were sent home, third grade master math teacher Voncile Campbell didn’t want her students feeling isolated. DETROIT – The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) and the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) Local 231 announced Tuesday they have reached agreement on a one-year successor contract for the 2020-21 academic year. A teacher with the Farmington Public Schools district has been placed on paid administrative leave as the district investigates social media posts that were made about the teacher by former students of another school district. A statement sent to Local 4 News from Farmington school district officials did not specify what was said in the posts, but said they became aware of the posts on Aug. 21. District officials said while the posts and its allegations were not made by Farmington Public Schools students, the district has initiated an internal investigation to thoroughly review the allegations to ensure the safety and security of our students, which remains our top priority.The teacher will remain on leave pending the internal investigation. The district said the issue was also referred to law enforcement. The district said virtual instruction will last for all K-12 students until at least Oct. 30.

DETROIT Stephanie Broddie is a teacher, a life long Detroiter and someone who cares deeply about her community. She barely stands five feet tall, but she managed to keep a protest peaceful with just her presence. My uncle used to work at that precinct, so all I can think is Are you guys serious? Oak Park School District teacher Owen Bondono has been named the 2020-2021 Michigan Teacher of the Year (MTOY). The Michigan Department of Education said Friday Bondono learned he was named Teacher of the Year during a virtual conference call meeting with all Regional Teachers of the Year. Bondono will be entering his sixth year of teaching English language arts in the fall at Oak Park High School 9th Grade Learning Community. State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice said the Michigan Teacher of the Year program is more than finding the best teacher, as that would be an impossible task. The Michigan Teacher of the Year is an important advocate and ally for teachers and students, Dr. Rice said.

He named the song Black Lives in honor of George Floyd and black men and women everywhere, It just seems, like the title was fitting, from one of the lines in the song and whats going on right now, said Banks. 34-year old Steven Banks is not just a rappers, but a local history teacher. He said the Black Lives Matter movement is a beautiful thing and he wanted to express that in a creative way, Musically, I wanted to use that voice as I had the opportunity. But he said as a black man and teacher, he wants to show his students that being black is powerful and their lives matter, I think of me as a black man.
