LIVONIA, Mich. – Police believe an 80-year-old Livonia man suffered a medical problem before his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic Monday afternoon on 5 Mile Road at Levan Road.
The crash which killed three people and involved seven vehicles shut down the intersection for hours.
It was about 3:30 p.m. when an 80-year-old Livonia man traveling westbound in a black sedan crossed the centerline on 5 Mile Road, striking a red Ford Focus which was traveling eastbound on 5 Mile Road. The 80-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The 67-year-old Redford Township woman who was driving the Focus also was pronounced dead at a hospital. Her 88-year-old passenger, who was a woman from Livonia, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
A Ford minivan also was involved in the crash. Its occupants suffered only minor injuries.
All victims are adults. No other serious injuries were reported.
The 80-year-old man has been identified as Joseph Sito. The 67-year-old woman has been identified as Suzanne Wernette-Robb. The 88-year-old woman has been identified as Bernadine Carby.
Although Livonia police believe Sito suffered a medical issue, the cause won't be known until an autopsy is complete.
