DETROIT – A 21-year-old man died in a crash on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit after another vehicle failed to stop for traffic backed up due to a semi truck crash and fuel spill.
Part of the northbound Lodge Freeway was closed after a car collided with a semi truck around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, near 8 Mile Road. Traffic was stopped for that initial crash when the secondary crash occurred.
A 34-year-old driver of a Chevy SUV failed to stop and struck a Dodge Avenger at 7:35 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Outer Drive, according to Michigan State Police. When troopers arrived, they found the driver of the Dodge Avenger unresponsive and began CPR.
Police said the Dodge Avenger was pushed into a Toyota and the Toyota was pushed into a Ford. The 21-year-old driver of the Dodge Avenger was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 21-year-old was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Chevy SUV was transported to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Police said there were no other reported injuries.
The Lodge was closed while police investigated the crash, but lanes were reopened by 11:17 a.m.
