DETROIT – Roadwork on I-696 in Oakland County will close several lanes and ramps through late fall 2024.

Crews will be installing traffic control devices, pavement markings, and realignment of the temporary median along I-696.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says both directions of traffic on I-696 will be shifted to the eastbound lanes between I-275 and the Lodge Freeway (M-10) throughout the project.

Some of the changes began over the weekend, and more are slated to begin next week. Here’s what to know.

Changes starting this week

Starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, the northbound I-275 ramp to eastbound I-696 will be closed from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Additionally, eastbound I-696 will be reduced to two lanes from I-275 to M-10 through late fall, while westbound I-696 will be reduced to two lanes from M-10 to I-275 for approximately one week.

Closures starting next week

Starting Feb. 26 and lasting through the late fall:

  • Eastbound and westbound I-696 will have two lanes open in each direction between I-275 and M-10.
  • Eastbound I-696 will have two lanes open from M-10 to Lahser Road.
  • Westbound I-696 will have two lanes shifted onto M-10 at Lahser Road/M-10/US-24.

The northbound Orchard Lake Road ramp and the Franklin Road ramp to westbound I-696 will also be closed through late fall. Orchard Lake Road will be detoured via westbound 12 Mile Road and southbound M-5 to westbound I-96. Franklin Road will be detoured via westbound 12 Mile Road and southbound Orchard Lake Road to westbound I-696.

The work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if necessary.
