ANN ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A driver was killed in Ann Arbor Township when a tire that fell off of an SUV on the opposite side of I-94 caused the roof of his car to cave in.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2024, on I-94 near State Street.

Officials said a 38-year-old Jackson man was driving a Dodge Journey west on I-94 when his front driver’s side tire came off.

The tire bounced over the median wall and struck the windshield and roof of a Chevrolet Malibu heading east on I-94, police said.

Officials said the impact of the tire caused the roof of the Malibu to cave in and hit the 49-year-old Dearborn Heights man in the driver’s seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police continue to investigate. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been a factor.
