SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – One person was killed, another needed a tourniquet, and two more were injured when a driver plowed into a group of people who stopped on I-75 to exchange information following a four-car crash.

The first crash happened before 1:15 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, in the northbound lanes of I-75, just south of East Holly Road, in Springfield Township.

Police said four people got out of their cars to exchange information after a four-car crash in the left lane of a construction zone.

While the group was in the middle of the roadway, another driver rear-ended one of the cars involved in the first crash. That collision caused a chain reaction, and three people involved in the first crash were struck, police said.

A 24-year-old Alpena native was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another person suffered a compound fracture and had to be treated with a tourniquet by Michigan State Police troopers.

A third person had minor injuries, and the driver of the car who caused the second crash was also taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Police continue to investigate the second crash.

“Please remember to move your vehicles out of travel lanes, if possible,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “If they can’t be moved, stay in your car with your seatbelt fastened. Call 911 and we will help make the area safe and get you off the roadway.”
