DETROIT – A driver was arrested after she went the wrong way on two Metro Detroit highways, police said.
Officials said they received calls around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2024, about a wrong-way driver on I-96.
The driver was heading east in the westbound lanes of I-96 between Evergreen Road and the Southfield Freeway in Detroit, officers said.
Michigan State Police troopers went to the area and learned that the car had started to head south in the northbound lanes of I-75 near Clark Avenue. Drivers reported the car was moving at a “high speed.”
The car crossed the Rouge River Bridge, and troopers spotted it as it passed Allen Road. Officials waited in a turnaround and used a PIT maneuver to stop the car.
The driver, a 23-year-old woman from Dearborn Heights, was taken into custody on suspicion of impaired driving.
No injuries or crashes were reported.
“We were extremely fortunate that this driver did not hit another driver head-on,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “Please remember: Do not get behind the wheel if you are impaired. There are way too many options available to get to your destination.”
