Driver killed when speeding car hits bridge pillar, catches fire on Detroit freeway

DETROIT – A driver was killed when a speeding car struck a bridge pillar and burst into flames on a Detroit freeway.

The crash happened at 10:05 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2024, on the southbound Lodge Freeway at Wyoming Avenue on the city’s west side.

Officials said a driver was heading south on the Lodge at a high speed and lost control. The car went off the road, up the embankment, and struck a bridge pillar at Wyoming Avenue.

The collision caused the car to catch fire, police said.

Firefighters extinguished the flames. The driver was found dead inside the car.

Michigan State Police troopers said they believe they have identified the driver, but official autopsy results are pending.
