Southbound M-53 in Macomb County reopens following crash that killed 2

Stretch of road was closed for several hours

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A stretch of southbound M-53 in Shelby Township reopened Thursday, June 6, after a multiple-vehicle crash killed two people.

According to authorities, a 33-year-old man driving southbound on M-53 rear-ended several vehicles near a construction zone just before 1 p.m., resulting in the deaths of an 88-year-old woman and a 63-year-old woman.

The multiple-vehicle crash caused authorities to shut down the road’s southbound lanes between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads for roughly five hours.

The at-fault driver was taken to a hospital, where he was arrested for two counts of moving violation causing death.
