Michigan State Police officer hurt in crash on I-75 to be taken off life support

Officer injured, woman killed in I-75 crash

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – A Michigan State Police officer who was injured in a crash on northbound I-75 in Lincoln Park is going to be taken off life support, according to police.

The crash happened at around 8:40 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, on northbound I-75 near Dix in Lincoln Park.

Police said a Michigan State Police motor carrier officer was conducting a traffic stop on a semi when he was struck by another vehicle. Witnesses told police the car struck the median wall before striking the patrol car and pushing it into the back of the semi.

The crash caused the officer to become pinned in the patrol car. The trooper was extricated and taken to an area hospital where he was originally listed in critical condition. Police said the officer, now identified as Danny Kerstetter, will be taken off life support, and his organs will be donated.

The woman in the car that struck his vehicle was pronounced dead on Friday. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Kerstetter had been with Michigan State Police for two years.

“We are heartbroken for this loss,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our motor carrier officers and troopers to keeping the public safe on our roadways is commendable and honorable. With the decision to give the gift of life, even in his death, MC Officer Kerstetter is serving others.”
